More About the Author

Duane has more fun teaching piano than should be legal, and that love of piano playing and chords and music in general is contagious. Thousands of piano students down through the years have benefited from his easy-going teaching style in person and through his many videos, audios, and publications.

*Duane is a graduate of Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon with a BS & Masters Degree in Humanities (Music & English literature - a double major) and he is known as "the man who wrote the book" -- since he is the author of over 500 books, CD's and DVD's having to do with all aspects of piano playing.

*But degrees and education means nothing without the ability to teach so that the student can UNDERSTAND and then APPLY what he or she understands. Take one course and you'll immediately see for yourself why Duane's DVD and CD courses are "one of a kind" -- they actually get you UNDERSTANDING music.

*Keyboard Workshop was established in 1965 to help piano players of all levels enhance their piano playing ability though the use of chords, styles, rhythms, runs, fills and other strategies. So we've been around the block a couple times, and we know what works!

*Duane started teaching in the Sacramento, California area in the early 60's, teaching both kids and adults in their homes. As he would drive from home to home he would listen to instructional cassettes in his VW bug, learning more and more about music and teaching.

*In 1966 he & Bev and his 2 children moved to Oregon where he resumed teaching both as a "route teacher" and then later opened his own piano teaching studio named "Piano University" featuring a network of electronic keyboards with headsets for both group and private teaching. The photo on the right shows two of Duane's students (one of which is Garin, his son) along with two of his teachers, Diane & Paul. Soon after that he established PlayPiano to make his courses available nationwide, and later worldwide.

There are many books on this subject (a saturation in fact) so it was difficult knowing how to separate the 'Wheat from the chaff' so to speak, however I was drawn to this as it is seemed relatively short and succinct based on the online reviews I examined which is exactly what I wanted, basically to be able to pick things up quickly and use them without having to troll through unnecessary content, and in this sense this book really delivers. The author definitely has a peculiar style of presenting information (a very eccentric american) which I find funny and likeable, but I would say you will either like or hate this style of prose (as with Marmite) but considering you can largely just ignore the text and copy the pictorial diagrams/chord descriptions; its not really a factor regardless.

The book is very clear and to the point and basically consists of simple accessible pictorial representations of chords/progressions, which is great for quickly learning new things as well as being able to refer back to sections with ease and I have found this book to be a great help in developing my musical repertoire on Piano. I like the way that it covers a great deal of ground, yet is really progressive, starting simple and in turn exploring increasingly complex structures; all in a short, small book that can easily be carried around. As such I highly recommend this as I found it enjoyable to read, learned a great deal and it forms a really useful reference.

Only negative points:
It's difficult to get the book to stay on the shelf of the piano. (Paperback)
I found a typo in one accord.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Summary 10 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I keep this as a reference book. It is in a sensible order and has the information that you need easily to hand. I'm not sure you can 'learn' from it, even though it is set out as lessons, but for a quick check on something it is excellent. Keep it handy and you will use it time and time again.
