1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing rubbish., 1 Jun 2001
By A Customer
When I purchased this book I must admit I was excited. I have read all of the Commonwealth books and was therefore looking forward to learning more about the lead up to Amalgamation. I was sorely disappointed. The story is at best weak and unbelievable and at worst drival. The lead Thranx character comes across as mentally deranged as opposed to a driven, brilliant mind as Mr. Foster wish us to believe. As for the Human.......well I won't start. If you wish to read a good Commonwealth book I suggest anything with Flinx in it, or maybe the Howling Stones. Do not buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not his best!, 15 Jul 2001
By A Customer
I almost didnt bother to read this book given the bad reviews. But having read it I would say its definitely worth the read! It has a slightly different style to the other commonwealth books, but the characters are vivid and amusing and it does a good job of telling the story of the earliest days of the commonwealth.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book written by Forster but was he forced?, 12 Jul 2000
Mr Forster people love your flinx novels, the book Crystal Tears is a gem of a book; and we have an idea! Write the story of the founding of the Commonwealth. Write the story of how the relationship between the Thanx and Humans developed after their first meeting in crystal tears and how flinx society was developed; great idea Huh. (Publisher) Well o.k. (forster) simple put it was a good idea but it lackes something and it took me a few days to figure out what it was and that is HEART. it has no soul in the writting.Forster wrote a reasonable little read that will disapoint alot of his readers and fans of the Commonwealth series. and the only reason i can think off is he has lost interest in the commonwealth theme which though dishearting to a fan like myself may be understandable. but instead of leaving the work alone he returns to that world. WHY? Is it because the publisher said it would make money.? they are right i brought it. but am disapponted and though I fear the second book will lack soul I know I'll buy that as well but I am beginning to feel used a bad sign for Forster

1.0 out of 5 stars An light-weight story made awful by a pathetic ending.
The characters are fine, they are likeable and sympathetic but in no way compelling or memorable but I can live with that. Read more
