Doesn't do what it says on the label,

This review is from: Photoshop CS3 in Easy Steps (Paperback)
If you were a competent graphic artist fully conversant with a similar program to photoshop this might be a good introduction to photoshop. For beginners like me it's certainly not "photoshop in easy steps". The problem is it tells you how to do something with absolutely no help as why or when you would want to do it. For example chapter 11 is "channels and masks" Now as a beginner I don't know what these are or what I would/could use them for. It doesn't say and dives in with "In quick mask mode you create a 50% red, semi-transparent overlay. The overlay is similar in concept to a traditional rubylith mask". Which to be honest doesn't make me any wiser. Similarly "Editing alpha channel masks - You can display an alpha channel without loading it into the image as a selection. You can then edit the mask by painting with black white or grey". Why I would do that I have absolutely no idea and the book doesn't tell me.
If you looking for an entry level book, despite its title this is not it, look elsewhere.

the thing about instructional books is that the good ones tend to be bulky and quite expensive - there are exceptions, and this book is one of them. concise (not too thick), nicely illustrated in colour, easy to understand and follow. if you're new to photoshop then this is ideal to get you up and running. for the casual user it's also useful especially with the more in-depth functions of the programme. i'd say i'm more than a casual user and this book consolidates and sharpens abilities for heavier users while encouraging the exploration of functions the user might not have contemplated or used. give it a try.

if youre looking for a book to teach yourself photoshop 3 this isnt it !!!!
essential basic concepts are not explained from the ground up and so its impossible to build understanding because of this. the chapter on layers is a prime example of this. if youve been used to a basic art package and think youll be able to 'wing it' with this book - youll be wrong cos cs3 is a complicated package. avoid this book !!!
