Product Description

Book Description

With such a rich, powerful and varied set of tools and commands in Photoshop CS3, where do you begin? Facing such a steep learning curve, many users achieve only the first few levels of proficiency. Photoshop CS3 in easy steps is designed to activate the full potential in the extensive Photoshop feature set. It achieves this by breaking down the application into a logical sequence of learning events. The book begins with a detailed tutorial on essential concepts and terms, introducing you to the Photoshop screen environment and its vocabulary. Then with easy step-by-step instructions and fact-filled sidebars, the primer walks you through the fundamental aspects of this image-editing application.

Photoshop CS3 in easy steps, completely revised, builds on its established reputation to guide you through the essentials of image file formats; making and refining selections; painting and editing; working with layers, paths and the pen tool, channels and masks; and color correction techniques. It doesn't stop there. As well as introducing new and enhanced features such as the Black & White command, Smart Filters, the Quick Selection tool, the Refine Edge command, and the Auto Align and Blend Layer controls, the book's final chapters cover applications in the ever-growing field of web and multimedia images. These chapters teach even relative novices the ABCs of slicing, image optimization and animations.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 sets the standard for professional image-editing. Photoshop CS3 in easy steps, with its clear instructions and plentiful screenshots, brings the full potential of this exciting creative tool to your fingertips.

If you were a competent graphic artist fully conversant with a similar program to photoshop this might be a good introduction to photoshop. For beginners like me it's certainly not "photoshop in easy steps". The problem is it tells you how to do something with absolutely no help as why or when you would want to do it. For example chapter 11 is "channels and masks" Now as a beginner I don't know what these are or what I would/could use them for. It doesn't say and dives in with "In quick mask mode you create a 50% red, semi-transparent overlay. The overlay is similar in concept to a traditional rubylith mask". Which to be honest doesn't make me any wiser. Similarly "Editing alpha channel masks - You can display an alpha channel without loading it into the image as a selection. You can then edit the mask by painting with black white or grey". Why I would do that I have absolutely no idea and the book doesn't tell me.
If you looking for an entry level book, despite its title this is not it, look elsewhere.

the thing about instructional books is that the good ones tend to be bulky and quite expensive - there are exceptions, and this book is one of them. concise (not too thick), nicely illustrated in colour, easy to understand and follow. if you're new to photoshop then this is ideal to get you up and running. for the casual user it's also useful especially with the more in-depth functions of the programme. i'd say i'm more than a casual user and this book consolidates and sharpens abilities for heavier users while encouraging the exploration of functions the user might not have contemplated or used. give it a try.

if youre looking for a book to teach yourself photoshop 3 this isnt it !!!!
essential basic concepts are not explained from the ground up and so its impossible to build understanding
because of this. the chapter on layers is a prime example of this. if youve been used to a basic art package
and think youll be able to 'wing it' with this book - youll be wrong cos cs3 is a complicated package.
avoid this book !!!
