Patronising 15 April 2004
Format:Paperback
Patronising and pretty much bereft of colour examples.
Show me a picture with an effect, then give me instructions on how to do it, is all I need. You would be better to subscribe to a digital camera magazine for a couple of months.

It may be better than I am giving it credit for, but the format drove me away after just a couple of hours of struggling to understand just what on earth they were talking about.

Well what more can i say, as i never knew anything about Adobe Photoshop 6 until i read this book. I was a complete novice until i sat back and started into this book. From the very beginning i was addicted, as now i can see why this Package rates as the best. I actually hate reading, but as soon as i coaxed myself into getting started into this book i did not want to put it down. This book really sets you up for what is in front of you, as it lays everything out in very good detail, and instead of getting fed up after an hour i actually could not get enough of this excellent book. Never did i even imagine that Photoshop had the capabilities that i started to experience even from the very first few chapters. Yes i was a total Dummie, but now after learning this book and discovering the potential of Photoshop i do not think i would buy another Package, as there is nothing quite like it. Every chapter has so much to offer that i was in no way going to get bored. To be honest i think i had been using Photoshop for years, as i had learned so much in just the space of a week. Yes that's right, a week, as i got so caught up in this book and so excited with what i was going to learn next that i was afraid to put the book down in case i missed out. From the very start to the finish this book gives you great detail on what is on offer, explaining very carefully each task so that even a Dummie like myself was able to take everything in without sighing. A must for beginners, as believe me, when you have picked up this book, you will get so caught up in it that you will not want to put it down, and one thing is for sure and that is once you have grasped the complexity and capabilities that this book has to offer you will be addicted. I have advanced from a Dummie to an advanced user in just the space of a week, and i feel proud. VERDICT: BUY IT :STAR RATINGS: ****** YES 6. You will definitely not be disappointed, and you will have a few laughs through your adventure, as the Author has quite a few witty remarks along the lines. Another fantastic product from the Adobe chain is Illustrator 9.0, as i was as much impressed with that product also. Now that i have learned both packages i must say i feel quite an expert.

Having bought the software - I was looking around for a good book to quickly and easily manipulate images and bought Photoshop 6 for Dummies by Deke McClelland. What a mistake! Mr McClelland is so busy trying to be witty - he quite misses the point on what the book is supposed to do! Teach Photoshop 6. Consequently, unneeded simple things are there - such as
"6. Press Enter (Return on a Mac) Experts say this this is the easiest step. Well, one guy got a blister on the end of his finger, but otherwise the vote was unanimous."

Yet, completely fails to give all the steps needed to do "something" or constantly refers you back to previous chapters. So in order to do anything - you find yourself going to at least 3 previous chapters to find what he is referring to. And some steps are missing! - how did he insert the new background on the stuffed lion? no idea! He doesn't tell us. Definitely not a book to be able to dip in and out of. This book is a waste of time and money.
