Review

Reviews of previous editions: 'As the name suggests, this is a handy and easy to use reference for all things Photoshop. Designed in an index format, Bargh's informative book is well-illustrated and a valuable asset for all getting into digital imaging.' Better Digital 'The book provides a visual representation of various features within Photoshop accompanied by succinct, punchy text, which enables you to learn fast and efficiently. Whilst many Photoshop books are tomes difficult to read and understand, this book, with its easy and intuitive layout makes learning a breeze... Overall, this book is an invaluable reference tool that should adorn every desktop when working in Photoshop. Highly recommended.' John Shaw, Digital Photo and Practical Photographer. '... this handy and simple-to-use paperback ... is a perfect adjunct to ... any other technique book dealing with Photoshop.' Professional Photographer 'There are stacks of guide books on Photoshop and I'd feared this would be another that is useful but impossible to navigate. The reality was a pleasant surprise, with the author honestly appraising some of the more esoteric features ... of all the Photoshop self-help guides I've come across, Peter Bargh's book is the easiest to use.' Amateur Photographer 'The book makes an excellent visual reference guide and should prove very useful for the beginner through to the advanced user.' Digital PhotoFX, five star rating

This book is invaluable when using photoshop. It has served three purposes. Firstly, if I need a quick reference guide to remind me how to achieve a certain effect then this is the reference book. Secondly, if I need an explanation of a function which I have not used before, having stumbled accross it while using Photoshop, then again this is the reference book. Finally, I have often opened the book at a random page and found a function or effect that I didn't know would be possible to achieve and in this way the book has expanded my knowledge of this programs abilities. The illustrations are excellent and each explanation is consice and to the point. I would recommend this book to anyone using Photoshop.

Format:Paperback
This is a comprehensive and comparatively inexpensive desktop reference book for Photoshop 7 users who want to explore the capabilities of the software.

Tools, filters, techniques and other features are set out alphabetically, making it easy to find out quickly what an unfamiliar menu item will do to your graphic. Each is explained by a concise text, usually including advice on effective use of the feature as well as the basic facts, liberally illustrated with colour screenshots.

Just as the title says, it is an A to Z listing. This is not a step-by-step tutorial type of book, so perhaps it would not be the first choice for absolute beginner. However, it should be an invaluable tool for anyone (student, artist, designer etc) who already has a basic understanding of Photoshop and wants to experiment with its visual capabilities.

This is an updated version of previous books based on earlier versions of Photoshop. There is an Appendix which compares the features of V7.0 with these earlier versions of the software, giving a quick indication of the pros and cons of upgrading your existing package (or not!). Other useful appendices include a guide to customising the package Preferences and an overview of some of the third-party plug-in filters available.

As an intermediate level Photoshop user, I found a few tips in this book which explained how certains aspects of Photoshop worked which I had never understood before, which was helpful. There were a few items which I had never encounterd before, which was also helpful. However, the book was more of a glossary of terms than a really useful "How to" book, which is what I wanted. In a way, it points the way for the reader to look elsewhere to hone special skills. If this is what you want, it is a useful, but not first rate book.
