1.0 out of 5 stars ...useful but very basic reading skills even a 12 year old knows..., 4 Nov 2001
By A Customer
I actually bought the photoreading whole mind system course that cost a lot more than the book itself. It promised an experience of a photographic memory and tells success stories of this but never mentions exactly how to do this.

Some of the reading skills mentioned are useful but very basic such as you can get a lot of information on a book or article by reading its summary. He mentions that the most valuable information is contained in the 1st sentence of a paragraph, which is something you are already taught at school.

He also mentions the importance of having a SPECIFIC purpose and not to think "I want to know everything" when reading a book. Once you have a specific purpose you photoread the entire book then you activate by visiting the contents and index page to find specifically where the information is..Nothing-new there (Except the useless photoreading which is turning the books pages every second so that the information gets stored into your unconscious mind!). He told a story of a professor who gave the questions to an exam at the beginning of the course and at the end of it, everyone knew exactly what the questions are so had a specific purpose so everyone got an A grade. What utter nonsense! As if that would happen in real life!
It is like saying that doctors should know what their patients are suffering SPECIFICALLY before patients see their doctor!

...this book... teaches useful but very basic reading skills even a 12 year old knows.

I even attended a seminar by Paul Scheele, which was full of people disappointed with the photoreading course. People went away from the seminar hoping photoreading works but it didn't.

The course tries to convince you to attend live seminars and buy other products by the author's company such as paraliminal tapes that help you get to the correct state of mind for photoreading...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but be wary of the hype., 25 May 2002
By A Customer
OK, the bottom line here is that photoreading is a COMBINATION of techniques or methods which, when used together, produce much better results than plodding through books one word and line at a time or regular 'speed' reading techniques. You might be sceptical of the claims of reading 25,000 words a minute or more, and I wouldn't be surprised if you were, but give the book a go and you should find a marked improvement in your reading speed AND your enjoyment of the stuff you would usually hate to read. I first used the method as an undergraduate, and it really did make life a lot easier. Tbe 'syntopic reading' section is easily applied to doing the research for presentations, essays, and literature reviews, and will likely get you better grades! Go on give it a go :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings-and a return visit to the subject, 24 Dec 2005
By A Customer
I bought the course and book 5 years ago. I keep revisiting it and have read about 50 books with it so far. However, I don't get the fantastic results claimed. As it happens I'm aware that my own mindset and attitude wasn't always 100% and sometimes I obsess and try too much at once with this stuff. The multiple pass approach does make psychological sense though I've yet to prove the photoreading part of it.

The reason I'm revisiting it is because an NLP trainer with whom I'm friends with and trust has invested the time in it and uses it a lot, he also recommends a seminar. He's got no profit to gain from my taking this up-he's my mate anyway LOL. So now, I'm going to start again with it as the technique would be useful. To anyone else thinking of taking it up-may I suggest a reliable PERSONAL recommendation if possible? Anyone can type anything on here to be fair. I suspect the truth about this course is between the useful and the fantastic claims. If so, it's worth reinvestigating.
