Every Sketch Up user wants to present their designs in the best possible light. What better way to bring them to life than to present them in a genuinely photographic manner? Although the V-Ray render engine has been available to SketchUp users for a good number of years now, the release of the 2.0 Version takes the production of photographic renders in SketchUp to a whole new level.

Using the V-Ray for SketchUp rendering engine through with clear, step-by-step instructions and companion graphics, this guide will give you everything you need to get started. This book has been designed to progressively introduce you to all the V-Ray tools you will need to produce photographic renders using V-Ray.

The journey begins with basics of camera composition, lighting, texturing, and then rendering an interior scene using the V-Ray engine. Using the scene files provided, we will learn how to set up lighting rigs for both daytime and nighttime interior shots, as well as seeing how we can make good use of V-Ray’s procedural day-lighting system on exteriors.

As a render will only be as believable as the component parts, we will learn the texturing system in V-Ray and how to use a variety of materials, maps, and layers to produce realistic surface properties for our geometry.

Before producing our final output, we will want to see how we can use the variety of quality control settings in V-Ray, including the Global Illumination and Image Sampling settings to produce a high level of quality for our project.

Add the finishing touches with some compositing and post-production techniques to bring out the full potential of the work you have done.

About the Author

Brian Bradley

Brian Bradley is a self-taught 3D artist and Training Author who started experimenting with creative software and 3D applications back in 1993. By the mid 90s, he was running his own small multimedia business working on projects as diverse as corporate logos, graphic design for clothing and vehicles, as well as developing full product and architectural visualization projects.

In 2007, he turned the attention of his family-run studio toward full-time production of CG Training, focusing initially on 3ds Max along with the mental ray and V-Ray render engines. In 2012, he joined the ranks of Training Authors producing course for the lynda.com online training library, producing (among others) V-Ray-based courses for 3ds Max, Maya, and of course, SketchUp.

Recently, Brian and his team have completed a revamp of the vrayelite.com website that they run and they plan to work at slowly but surely expanding both the level and quality of training and content that it houses.

As a regular Sketchup user who has a passion for CGI rendering, I was delighted when I heard this book was going to print! A lot of the on-line tutorials and books I have looked at in the past were for the 3DS Max version of VRAY and although helpful, there is really nothing like having a copy which is solely for Sketchup!
To date, I have found the authors writing format very easy to work through and understand. Already I am learning some key & basic setting I was not aware of; particularly when it comes to setting up interior lighting. The author explains how using various test rendering set-ups will minimise rendering time and improve your overall final render.
The book is aimed at VRAY 2.0 for Sketchup but as a 1.49 version user, I have still found it extremely useful and look forward to readign the second half over the coming week or so. If you are a VRAY for Sketchup user looking to improve your final renders while also picking up a few extra tips, I definitely recommend this book is on your desk / Kindle.
I woudl recommend this book to both new and experienced VRAY users.

As a training author ( lynda.com ) I had the opportunity to be one of the Technical Reviewer for this book and so having already worked through all of the steps from cover to cover, I can honestly say that it covers a lot of ground.

Given that SketchUp is not my usual 3d Application of choice (this being 3ds Max) I was a little concerned that chunks of information in the book may not have been particularly relevant/useful to me personally, which surprisingly was not the case! Because the book really does concentrate on V-Ray as a tool rather than the functionality of the host application, a lot of the principles and steps taken in the text teach as much about rendering in general as they do about V-Ray specifically. I would expect that even non sketchup (and even V-Ray users) could still pull a good amount of useful knowledge from this book.

The Book starts with a ‘hands on’ quick fire chapter that forces the reader to jump right in to the nitty gritty of V-Ray and shows how to create the basic ingredients a good quality render. You definitely won't spend the first few chapters twiddling your thumbs. From here the book backtracks a little and takes us through a much more methodical approach to lighting and rendering, showing why you would want to choose one option over another in V-Ray whilst at the same time showing what the option can do for us.

This approach might not be everyones cup of tea as a couple of the chapters look purely at the technical aspects of lighting and materials in general, but personally I prefer to know ‘why’ I’m being told to do something inside a piece of software and so this was not a problem for me. It certainly arms the user with knowledge that can be applied to trying out their own approach.

When I first saw the title of this book, I was quite enthusiastic about it. I've used SketchUp on/off for a couple of years. 3D isn't my greatest passion, so I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to it, and that makes SketchUp perfect for me. It makes a lot of the tasks - that I need to perform - really easy to do.

This book would give me an opportunity to visualize the scenes I work on, in a much better way, and with that in mind, I began reading.

Despite my enthusiasm and expectations, I was not at all disappointed by the book. The author, Brian Bradley, starts out by plunging the reader into the deep end of the pool, by giving you a full scene (remember to download the 'code samples') to work with. He then describes the steps he typically goes through whenever he works out a quality render, but he doesn't do it in minute detail. Instead, he saves those for later, and instead lets the reader see the scene develop from a generic indoor SketchUp-scene, to a photographic rendering.

Once he has given the reader a taste of what a high-quality scene could potentially look like, he then goes on to describe lighting techniques and theories in four chapters. If you do not have a good knowledge of math, these chapters can perhaps seem a bit heavy, but I can assure you that they are well worth the extra time you'll be spending on them then.

After the chapters on lighting, the author goes on to describe how to make materials, including coverage on several effects such as chrome, frosted glass, and reflections generally.

The next chapter, which is chapter eight, explains scene composition and camera positions/setup in details that helps to explain a lot of the things he mentions in chapter one.

The remaining chapters are dedicated to quality control, and post-processing. I have to admit that I found his choice of post-processing tool (Adobe After Effects) to be a bit odd, but once I read the chapter, it made sense. He works on a single image, applying filters and what not to it, while explaining that it could just as easily be applied to a series of images, and thus an animation sequence.

In conclusion, if you enjoy working with Google SketchUp on any level, then I would highly recommend giving this book a read, as it will enable you to add high-quality rendering to the scenes you've been working on. It will also give you a good understanding of composition as well as lighting, be it an indoor or outdoor scene, which is useful on an even deeper level than "just" V-Ray with SketchUp.

At first I was rather skeptical about this book, I was always interested CG rendering and 3D design and this book seemed like a good direction to take. I really enjoyed the hands on approach, make sure you download the code documents in order to follow along. While SketchUp is free for educational uses as mentioned on their website it is worthy to note it didn't feel limited in any way compared to the paid version. Setup was pretty easy under Windows 8 and everything went without a hiccup.

Chapter 1 set the pace and I was already sold on this book, then I was wondering why are there so many chapters on lighting! Well from my experience with 3D game techniques it's really hard to mimic light! So for me the three chapters were needed but also very well written, from the daytime scene to night and final touch ups, what an awesome transformation. If you are not into math you should really get into it for this, light is very tricky and in order to understand it you will need some working level of math on a higher level. If you're anything like me that is very limited but your willing to keep pushing forward until you understand it, don't feel bad I had to go over this a few times. I did get my ah-ha moment though.

I think it is extremely important to mention the quality control chapter, it has got to be one of the best things I've seen since toasted sliced bread! DO NOT SKIP IT, if you really want your work to shine take the extra steps to perfect it. No shock that you will be adjusting the lighting quality here again! I would give this book a 10/10 or 100/100 if I could, I know it isn't going to take my hand and walk me down the path of using SketchUp overnight, and that isn't why I purchased this book. I wanted to see what goes into the "behind the scenes" with CG level animations and rendering, this book didn't disappoint me. The material was covered well and I felt like I was making progress, don't feel bad if you tinker around with the settings and divert from the book. I find it sticks in my mind better if I go a bit off course!
