Each description is supported by a clear colour photograph taken where possible in the reptile's natural habitat. The guide looks at the more common reptiles as well as focusing on some of the rarer, and in many cases highly endangered, species. This new edition has been thoroughly updated by the author to take into account changes in nomenclature and classification.
About the Author
Indraneil Das is Professor of Herpetology at the Institute of Biodiversity Conservation, Universiti of Malaysia Sarawak. He received his doctorate from the University of Oxford, England, and was a Fulbright Fellow at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, USA. His other books include photographic guides to the reptiles of India (2002) and Borneo (2005), also published by New Holland. His most recent work is the definitive A Field Guide to the Reptiles of South-East Asia, published by New Holland in 2010. Indraneil Das is a frequent contributor to scientific journals such as the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology and the Journal of Herpetology.

Hi fellow reptile and snake lovers,
I bought this book when I knew I would be going out to Sri Lanka for my son's wedding.
It is a small pocket sized paperback in full colour with 143 pages mostly in colour with some black and white line drawings.
The book includes maps of Sri Lanka, a full checklist of species, chapters on climate , landscape and vegetation, conservation, protected areas of Sri lanka, snakebite and its management(hopefully you will never have to use this bit-but read it anyway just in case.....
The photo's are excellent and there is a full index of species listing all snakes lizards and chameleons etc found throughout the islands.
You don't always get a long look at snakes in the wild, they are usually aware of you before you are aware of them so when I do find one I immediately take a photo and then you can read through this book back at base to confirm what you have seen.
One small criticism is that the book does not always state clearly if a species is venomous or not and if you enjoy handling snakes as I do it is best not to chance anything unless you are 100% certain of the species-it may just be because some species though identified may not have been tested for venom which is best left to experts in the field.
All in all and excellent little book for the interested and experts alike.

A great little reference book. It doesn't weigh much and it's a handy size, so take it with you on your next trip to Sri Lanka so you can identify all the wonderful creatures you see!
