Book Description

1 Dec 2000
This title focuses on the essentials of bird identification in East Africa by presenting those species that are most likely to be seen in accessible habitats throughout the region. The text for each species highlights the diagnostic feature or combination of features that will enable the birdwatcher to most easily identify the bird. For those species that are sexually dimorphic, have both breeding and non-breeding plumage, or in which the juvenile plumage differs markedly from that of the adult, more than one photograph has been included. Thumbnail silhouettes aid the reader in quickly locating the correct group of birds, and for each species account a map shows the bird's distribution.

4.0 out of 5 stars handy pocket-book 5 Jan 2008
As the author himself says in his preface, how do you pick a sixth of the beautiful & varied birds of this amazing region? He has done a pretty good job with a wide choice illustrated by , in the majority, his own photograghs aided by clear distribution maps. A very helpful pocket book to keep on you whether on safari or just wandering around public parks and gardens.

3.0 out of 5 stars A compromise between coverage and size 23 Mar 2011
By doggo
I bought this book for a holiday on the NE coast of Kenya, and wanted something I could carry every day, even when the purpose of the day's outing was not birdwatching. I found the book's coverage - number of species - too restricted for the locations I visited. I saw many birds which I could identify only by family, and I don't often need a book to do that. That said, I did find it very portable and when the species was included, easy to use to identify what I was seeing. Given the number of species in the whole of East Africa, some compromise is inevitable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good photos and pocket size 16 Oct 2009
Took this book on a recent trip to Kenya. The convenient size allowed me to have it in a pocket. I have come to prefer photos to drawings.
