Product Description

Product Description

This title focuses on the essentials of bird identification in East Africa by presenting those species that are most likely to be seen in accessible habitats throughout the region. The text for each species highlights the diagnostic feature or combination of features that will enable the birdwatcher to most easily identify the bird. For those species that are sexually dimorphic, have both breeding and non-breeding plumage, or in which the juvenile plumage differs markedly from that of the adult, more than one photograph has been included. Thumbnail silhouettes aid the reader in quickly locating the correct group of birds, and for each species account a map shows the bird's distribution.

handy pocket-book 5 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
As the author himself says in his preface, how do you pick a sixth of the beautiful & varied birds of this amazing region? He has done a pretty good job with a wide choice illustrated by , in the majority, his own photograghs aided by clear distribution maps. A very helpful pocket book to keep on you whether on safari or just wandering around public parks and gardens.

Took this book on a recent trip to Kenya. The convenient size allowed me to have it in a pocket. I have come to prefer photos to drawings.

We recently travelled to Uganda and did some very casual bird spotting (Kampala, Fort Portal-area) and some slightly more serious bird watching (Entebbe Botanical Gardens, Queen Elizabeth NP---Mweya peninsula and Maramagambo forest). For the first, its good. Very compact (pocketable), well laid out, good photos (above and below where useful e.g. soaring birds of prey), geographical extent per page. For the latter, it is inadequate: very common birds e.g. black-headed gonolek at Mweya simply aren't included and the detail is terse. (We never took the book, but instead compared our notes with it when we got back and bought Birds of East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi (Helm Field Guides) which is much heavier and bulkier but excellent if you know something about the general families you are trying to ID.) The foreword is honest about both the poorer coverage of Uganda and the limited species contained within.

Only if you have a casual interest, or want a photographic guide, and are not doing detailed travelling (esp. in U.), or have very limited space, will I'd recommend it but it is handy for these purposes.
