Book Description

8 April 2012
This book, a complete guide to the operation and features of the Fujifilm X10 digital camera, is a follow-up to the author's earlier guides to advanced compact digital cameras, including the Fujifilm X100 as well as models by Leica, Panasonic, Canon, and Nikon. The new book explains all operations, features, menus, and controls of the Fujifilm X10 camera in clear language, providing guidance not only about how to accomplish things with the camera, but when and why to use certain features. The book does not assume any specialized knowledge by the reader, but explains topics such as shooting modes, autofocus, manual focus, depth of field, aperture priority, shutter priority, HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, white balance, ISO, and macro photography. The book shows how to take advantage of the camera's unique CMOS sensor with Fujifilm's EXR technology. This special sensor enables the camera to be configured for high resolution, high sensitivity in dim lighting, or high dynamic range, depending on the lighting conditions the photographer is faced with. The book also provides guidance about the many the X10's many other advanced settings, including adjustments for Color, Sharpness, Highlight Tone, Shadow Tone, and numerous others. The guide's more than 200 photographs, almost all in full color, provide illustrations of the camera's controls and menus, and include examples of the various types of photographs that can be taken using the many creative settings of the camera, including the Film Simulation settings, which let the photographer alter the color processing and other aspects of images; various menu options such as Dynamic Range and Intelligent Digital Zoom; and the camera's strong set of features for continuous shooting. In addition, the book goes beyond everyday photography with introductions to more advanced topics such as infrared photography, astrophotography, digiscoping, street photography, and creating 3D (three-dimensional) images that can be viewed with conventional red and blue 3D glasses. The book also includes a full discussion of the video recording abilities of the Fujifilm X10, which can capture high-definition (HD) video with stereo sound and can take silent slow-motion movies to enable studies of sports and other actions. In three appendices, the book provides information about accessories available for the camera, including cases, filter adapters, and external flash units; sets forth a list of useful web sites and other resources for further information; and includes a section with helpful "quick tips" that give particular insights into how to take advantage of the camera's features in the most efficient ways possible. The book includes a detailed Table of Contents and a full Index, so the reader can quickly find needed information about any particular feature or aspect of the camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide, price aside... 6 May 2012
By J-Mo
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've used one of Alexander White's previous guides and so purchased this one with little hesitation. The X10, whilst benefiting from a range of controls similar to a DSLR, isn't always intuitive to use. In my opinion, the manual that comes with the guide often fails to explain things to a level of detail that would help to avoid unnecessary frustration after you put it down (e.g. quirks of the programme mode such as not being able to go any further than a shutter speed of less that 1/4). Don't get me wrong, the manual is 'sufficient', but if you want to push the camera to the it's fullest capabilities, it's useful to fully understand the camera's 'idiosyncrasies'. This guide is a great companion that goes a few steps further than the main guide (there's still a place for the guide for quick 'at a glance' references). The benefit of the author's recommendations also come in handy as well as his tips for exploiting some of the cameras more unique features e.g. where EXR mode may be better for handling dynamic range situations than it can in other modes. There's a great section on accessories too which may save you time trawling around the internet for things like a 40mm UV as I did.
A good book although I opted for the Kindle version as the price of the the book itself was a little too steep for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Light in the Darkness! 14 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is the first thing you should buy when you get your X10 - for the simple reason that the instruction manual supplied with the camera is truly appalling.

Speaking as someone who used to write instruction material for Kodak, I found the structure of Fuji's manual convoluted and the instructions obscure. Above all, you can't find anything, as the booklet has no index. A reference book without an index is bordering on insanity.

In contrast, this book by Alexander White is a model of how a guide should be written. It is comprehensive, logical and crystal clear, with an excellent index. It also provides sensible and useful advice throughout on how to start using this complex little beast and get to grips with the multitude of functions provided.

Fuji should give a free copy of this book with every X10 it sells. But as it doesn't, all users should order one from Amazon immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice book, well pleased 8 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I know that it may seem a bit expensive at first glance, but it's a very nicely printed and presented book which is very helpful to people like myself who are looking to get more out of their X10.
The addition of the pdf version is a real bonus. The pdf copy is in full colour and an exact copy of the book, but with interactive features, making it easy to search from the index, and which you can carry round with you on any mobile device that can read pdf files.
To get the pdf version, you will need to email the author giving details of your purchase, and in my case, he responded immediately and I was able to download it without a hitch.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent 29 Aug 2012

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is a valuable addition to X10 users and is a must for those new to photography. And advanced digital cameras
The instruction book by Fuji does little more than name parts and functions but does not go much beyond that.whereas Mr wrights book gives details on what does what and how to apply it. Get one in colour though.

5.0 out of 5 stars essential reading 20 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you are serious about your photography using the X10, you should get this book. If you are only a point & shoot person you
should still get this book. Whatever your approach, you will learn how to take better pictures. It explains thing in a much easier to
understand way than the guidebook that comes with the camera. ( but it is a big read).

3.0 out of 5 stars No longer fully up to date 4 Feb 2013
By TerryM
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Miles better than the notoriously unclear owners manual provided with the camera. However, firmware updates to the X-10 included additional functionality and options not covered by this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the manual it comes with. 28 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The Fujifilm X10 is a fairly unique breed of camera. A compact that behaves like a film camera. Should be every photographer's dream, right?

Well... It could have been, except that rather than just giving us aperture, speed and ISO controls, Fuji saw fit to cram so many additional electronic options into their lovely little retro-styled product.
Not only that, but the system design and menu architecture of the X10 sometimes confounds us with illogical and poorly thought-out options that sometimes seem to defy all reasoning and sense.

Fortunately, this book helps considerably in the owner's quest to discover a route through the maze of menus and options. It's been written by someone who obviously knows the X10 through experience, rather than a techie from Fuji's factory.
The book in my opinion could have been about half the size it is had the author dispensed with a lot of the more basic photographic theory. However, to someone for whom the X10 is their first step up from traditional "point'n'squirt" cameras or even cellphones, it will provide an abundance of knowledge in an easy-to-understand manner.

I would have liked to have seen included a laminated pocket-sized "Cheat sheet" with menu functions and settings on (Like Nikon used to give you with their professional SLRs back in the day) But other than that, no real complaints.
Maybe a little pricey for what it is, but it's no worse in this regard than the "Magic Lantern" series of guide books, so not unreasonable in terms of value for money.

Not a substitute for hands-on time with the camera, but a useful step along the road to mastery of the X10. Recommended.
