Product Description

Product Description

The PhotoSEL BD113WB Reversible Black/White Collapsible Background combines the two most often used colours into one background. It offers quick set-up and take-down for versatility and easy portability. It is perfect for head and shoulder portraiture as well as deposition-type videos. It can be positioned vertically or horizontally to suit your subject and, when you are done, it collapses into a third of its size and stores in the included flat circular carry bag.

For the photographer who does on-the-fly head shots, this background can be a lifesaver. When used in conjunction with the optional PhotoSEL Background Support System or propped up against a wall, this background can be taken anywhere to rapidly shoot multiple subjects. For example, in a corporate office where various employees need head shots for a brochure.

Please note colours depicted may vary slightly, due to differences in computer monitors, printed media, and variances in manufacturer's dyes or paints.

I've been looking at backgrounds to try and get some high-key shots, as well as some moody dark shots.

My criteria was:-
* must fit in my small living room, so had to be no more than 2m (W) x (2m) (H)
* must be able to fold or collapse to a small size for portability and storage
* must be very easy and quick to assemble and disassemble
* must be able to accomodate a train along the floor for full length portraits
* must not need ironing every time it's used
* must be reasonably priced
* must have white and black backdrops

I considered the Lastolite high-key collapsible background, but it's only really for white b/grounds and is stupidly expensive. I also considered various muslin sheets, but many people say these need constant ironing. Vinyl and paper were also out of the question; all three of these would need a support system, usually a goalpost setup consisting of 2 supports and a crossbar. This adds to the price and is also too much for me to carry and store. I also don't really have the room for this for home studio type shots.

I stumbled across this PhotoSel collapsible background. It ticks all the boxes and is perfect for my uses. Springs open in under a second, good size and folds up again in just a few seconds (once you get the hang of it; there are no instructions in the packaging, so I simply found a tutorial video on the web, perfect). It's also a reasonable price. I've also purchased the white and black trains for it. Highly recommended!

Perfect for portrait work. Took a couple of tries to find out how to fold it up, but once you have the knack it is not a problem. Highly recomended.

For clarity, I enumerate my thoughts:
1. The item arrived (by UPS) one day before scheduled in acknowledgement e-mail (Super saver method).
2. It comes in a PhotoSEL black zipped case, c.27 inches in diameter, so is portable for location shoots and stores away well.
3. It pops out to a relatively huge size and, having no stand, can be propped against a wall vertically or horizontally, with one short edge having a small loop (place it out of your frame).
4. Note that the rounded rectangular shape means that, in the vertical mode, a standing figure would need to keep their feet in the middle, else you would need to clone out the odd corners.
5. The black side presents a usefully dark (black) background for portrait or full figure shots (if the subject is not too tall). Worked ok indoors with available light from a large window.
6. The white side I found less satisfactory for these reasons: fabric a little creased towards the corners; fabric is slightly off-white to very pale grey; a narrow black band edges the backdrop on this side.
7. The backdrop could also be rested, for example, horizontally along the back of a sofa so as to give a plain background to a seated person, if the wall itself was not plain enough.
8. You just need to contain your subject within the confines of the backdrop and crop off any unwanted margins in your photo processing application.
9. Head and shoulders or waist-up shots are easier to achieve than full figure shots unless the subject's feet are kept tidy.
10. I haven't tried it, but the white side might also be used as a large reflector.
11. There are no instructions on how to fold it up! There is a certain knack which you can learn from various online videos (the B&H one on YouTube is good). Take care not to break objects indoors!
12. Summary: good to have if used within its size limitations if you cannot go up to a larger set-up such as a paper roll on stands.

I've only used the black side so far but I'm very impressed. The black is extremely jet black so there's no chance of shadows or faded grey in the images. It's the best type of pop up background I've used so far. The only concern is that as it's fabric it picks up hair and dust quite a bit however it's not hard to clean. Also, beginners will find it hard to fold back into the bag but once you get the knack it's easy.

The minimum you need at home for photographs that focus on a single subject. Really big when open, surprisingly small when closed. As others have said, you'll need to refer to a video to repack it but it's simple once you have the knack. Fits in the car boot.

This in all essence looks similar to lastolite collapsible but it isn't.
The backdrop arrived in a very thin case. (not going to last well on location shoots)
When unfolded the backdrop was full of creases. When I contacted the seller they stated that other customers had been able to iron them out with a bit of care.
The whole point of these kinds of backdrops is the ease and speed with which they can be used. I suspect taking an iron on location with me each time would slow down the process and make it a tad more difficult!
I have a few Lastolite backdrops which fold back up with ease. Unfortunately the metal which tensions the backdrop around it's circumference is so thick that it is very difficult to collapse.

The white could be a bit better (slightly grey) but all in all its great to use as a reflector, dampener and as a background. Obviously it wrinkles so if your subject is close to it (unless ur doing head shots) photoshop/low dof is required. T-Shirty type material. But I use it a lot, and people keep borrowing it so its already a good buy. Folds up - really transportable (and I don't have a car).

NIGHTMARE for me to get back into the shape required for packaging to begin with. Luckily I practiced A LOT at home before using it in any clients/sitters homes.

Product as described, delivered very quickly. Good condition. Totally fit for purpose. Decent price. Very polite and helpful delivery driver.
