Rory Gallagher - Notes from San Francisco

Biography

RORY GALLAGHER
In the years that have passed since Rory Gallagher’s death, aged 47 on June 14 1995, his true stature has
become ever more clear. This soft spoken Irishman, characterised by his flowing locks and trademark
working man stage clothes, was far from ordinary. Gallagher was a self taught virtuoso who forged a
musical revolution in his native land, shunned the traps of fame and stardom yet… Read more in Amazon's Rory Gallagher Store

My Dad had this on vinyl LP when it was originally released. I liked it then (even thought I was 6 years of age).
Then I flirted with dance music and rap, and pop as I grew up.
Started getting back into PROPER music when I took up the guitar, and was starting to buy on cd all those decent rock-albums my dad had previously had on LP.
I bought this one in the early part of the year...its now October, and it has not been out of my car, and now I am quickly purchasing all I can of Rory Gallagher's back catalogue.
This is one of his rockier albums, and I for one do not believe there is a bad track on here, including many different styles, from straight forward rock, to his more bluesy stuff, and his great slide guitar sound is also on here.
It's only since I have been playing guitar that I realised what an absolutely fantastic guitarist Rory was, had his own sound completely, and I now think I would recognise his sound anywhere.
My particular favourite on here is the first track "shin-kicker", but only just...too many great ones to really say for sure.
The rest of his band are playing tight, and its one album that benefits from really playing loud.
Its a shame that Rory is no longer with us, and I really wish I just could have been that bit older to have seen him perform live.
I am just glad I have discovered him now.
I can thouroughly recommend this cd, sounding a lot fresher than its 27 years of age. Shame a lot of todays music doesnt sound this good even after a year!
After you have bought this cd...I am sure you will (like me) want to find out more about Rory's music.

As well as spawning two of what would become two of Rorys best live tracks "Shinkicker " & "Shadow Play", Photo Finish also reflects on the bluesmans ability to talk about pain. The agony of heartbreak in "Fuel to the Fire " is mirrored by the wails of the guitar in the song. My own favourite has always been "Overnight Bag" -" reflecting the price Rory had to pay for his constant touring - a sort of Highway Child for the 70's. What I also like is the obvious pleasure that he had in recording songs about things he liked - Cloak and Dagger is inspired by his love of 1950's/ 60's gangster films. He pays homage to early bluesmen in Mississipi Sheiks, another outstanding song. While it was great to hear the extra tracks, my only concern was that they possibly diluted what is an excellent album - but I'm just being picky - Photo Finish is an excellent introduction to the many layers that Rorys music has to offer.

1979- just 5 years after the incendiary Irish Tour.Rory G has decided to join, or has been nudged toward, the mainstream. This and its follow up and companion piece "Top Priority",along with In Concert TV appearances was the G-Man's foray into slightly more commercial territory.Heaven help us he even released an EP from this (on TEN INCH VINYL!!!)and later would release singles. So a sell-out then? Leaving his roots behind?

NAAAAHHHH!

This is great stuff, played with love and that rarely successful technique of making complicated intricate guitar work sound simple.

Shin Kicker plays like he's truly taking bends at speed on a high powered motorcycle, accelerating away and leaving the pretenders-literally and figuratively-in his wake.
Brute Force and Ignorance-about a rock n roll band that come to town, blow most of the townsfolk away and then leave 'em pining for more-is a romp, good humoured and very recognitive.
Shadow Play- ohhh a real classic this one.The guitar intro has now passed into legend as instantly recognisable, the soloing a masterclass of fretwork.
Overnight Bag is where this new found maturity reaches its absolute peak.It is beautiful, economic and very soulful, the guitar work soars and dives and there is not a note out of place, or too long, or that doesn't deserve to be there.
Gone was the youthful fire and "sparks coming from the fingers" of the old Rory, replaced by a wiser, more adult man who, but for the tragedy that was to befall him, could have been around for years just getting better with age.His Live act was still a wonder of the modern age-indeed he was untouchable at his best-but this was the beginning of a new Rory, one which sadly never stayed around long enough to show us how great he might have been.
