The third offering from texas based Black Angels and probably the best.
Gone is the massive wash of reverb for something a little clearer but far more 60's sounding. The vocal production is nothing short of excellent as is the recording in general. Steph sound better than any other of their albums, the drums are big and round!

There is more of a garage sound about this album with some cracking little tunes (Telephone and Yellow Elevator being highlights).
If directions to see a ghost was a little to darkly psychedelic for you then pick this one, you'll love it!!

honestly I'm happy for this album, when getting it was half expecting and half- sure it was going to sound like the dark psychedelic vibe of their las two albums, anti-war, recesses of society exposure and hippy cynicism. Oddly enough in this album they're trying to sound more British in their tastes, I keep hearing snippets of style of The Horrors in their wall of sound.

Frankly their change was coming, after two albums of really dark negative thought, they would have blown their heads off from all the self imposed depression, (its not a bad thing, but a change in mood is good) , this album is quirky, hip and strangely disturbing in some hidden meaning in which i'm not going to explain, because I feel it ruins the fun of listening to good and real independent minded music, these guys I want to hang out with.

I downloaded this album a long time ago, and now have all the Black Angels material accompanying me on my ipod wherever I go. I've finally gotten round to picking up the Vinyl now, and what a joy to behold. I won't dwell on the music - if you're thinking of buying this album you already now how brilliant this band are, instead I just want to say that the packaging for this album is perfect - If you're a vinyl fan you need to get this. It's an absolute bargain - thick, high-quality vinyl gives majestic depth to their incredible sound - the sleeve is made from really thick, sturdy card and the 16 page lyric booklet is a perfect addition. Clearly this band, or their label understand that their fans are likely to be vinyl lovers and they've really done this record proud.

i brought this album last week with great expectations and have listened to it 5 times now and i cant help feeling a bit let down by it , unlike their first two albums it lacks intensity and some of the lyrics are a bit dull to say the least, some of the songs are ok but only ok-if this is their first album your going to buy i would suggest maybe buy their first one which is far superior to this slightly mediocre offering

After reading a Sunday supplement review for this record (Sunday Times), as a general Lo Fi / alternative rock fan I thought I'd give it a go....I'm not going to get hung up on some wordy, anal review of the technicalities of every track, nor compare it to other music. You need to listen to this and absorb it, boy you will appreciate it.

I dont know why I've never noticed this band before, I love the fuzzy Stoner Rock sound (I've been into the similar sounding Radio Moscow for some time now). Now I know what I've been missing - from start to finish, this is a fantastic disc. Great vocals with hollow screams, warm guitar tones, full bass, relentless but restrained drums, 60's psych organs.... and quite a dreamy trippy ambience to it all. Sinister and disturbing all at the same time. Both retro and contemporary. I've since acquired the previous two albums, I like this band so much.

I've had Phosphene Dream on a continuous loop in the car since it arrived on the release day - it really gets better with every listen. Shoot me down in flames, but this is as good as anything The Doors recorded. If this genre hits the spot for you, grab a copy and play until it wears out.

Was getting a bit worried after the last album, would they totally go all the way towards that underlying Joy Division alternative rock sound and forget the 60's altogether? Thankfully they haven't and superb drone based rock and massive fuzz guitar riffs are abound! This music is just the best; in fact I love everything about this group, 'niche' lead vocal, 'neo-psych' band name, 'nico' band logo and 'nice' female drummer to go. First six tracks fufil the drone rock sound we all know and love. River of Blood in particular shows strong Elevators influences. The last four tracks are a bit slower and a touch quieter, whilst Telephone is about chart friendly as they would want to get. Still all good though and for 3rd album material first class. Turn on, tune in and drone out.

Great album from a band that has created another 2 great albums, their music incorporates dark drone guitars, with a pinc of psychedelia thrown in, creating a nice mixture guitar based rock music.
