They work, but degrade the quality of the sound coming from the speaker. I had to check to make sure, so I connected one of my speakers direct to my sub using the normal cable, and then connected the other one using this extension cable, and the difference in quality and sound was very noticeable.
I am now going to look for some more.

I used this to extend the Wii component audio to a separate sound system. This is a great solution if your sound unit and television both need to be accessed. The cables do not seem to reduce the quality of sound.
