Product Description

Synopsis

The aim of this book is to teach children to read and write through an early systematic phonics programme. This means that the children are taught the main 42 sounds of English, not just the alphabet sounds. With this knowledge they are taken through stages of blending sounds to form words and then to reading. At the same time they are taught to write by identifying the sounds in words and relating the letters to those sounds. This handbook provides a programme for the first year of learning to read and write, the first 8-9 weeks of which should be spent learning the letter sounds. That is one letter sound a day. It is multi-sensory, active and particularly suitable for young children. Step-by-step guidance is given for the teacher, with photocopiable worksheets for the children. The structured approach is suited to a whole school, whole class approach, but it also works well with individual children. A timetable of the initial 9/10 week programme is on the facing page.

The teaching has been divided into the following 5 basic skills, each of which has its own chapter: learning the letter sounds; learning letter formation; blending - for reading; identifying the sounds in words - for writing; and tricky words - irregular words. Although the teaching has been separated into these basic skills, it is important to realize that they are all taught at the same time. The key advantages of this system are that it teaches children all the main letter sounds early on and to relate the sounds to the symbols and so understand the alphabetic code used for reading and writing.

From the Back Cover

The Phonics Handbook is a comprehensive resource for teaching reading and writing

The Phonics Handbook enables reading to be taught in a simple and straightforward way through an understanding of the 42 main sounds of English. Extensive photocopiable material is provided so that a full programme is available from the book. The children can be taken through the stages of recognising the sounds of English, blending sounds to form words, to identifying the sounds in words (phonological awareness) so they can become good spellers. The author writes from considerable experience and there is a wealth of practical hints.

The pages in the book have been made slightly wider than A4, so that copies can be made without showing the binding.

In this third edition The Phonics Handbook follows the series of skills that are the basis of the Jolly Phonics programme. Tricky Words are included specifically, along with the alternative ways of spelling the vowels.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for teaching early reading., 16 Nov 2001
By A Customer
An excellent guide for teaching early reading, with lots of practical ideas. Children are excited and motivated to learn. The 'actions' associated with the letters are quickly learnt and easily recalled. This enhances the learning process. A must for all Early Years Practioners.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for encouraging young minds to learn, 24 Jan 2006
By A Customer
My son's pre-school introduced the jolly phonics system to him at the age of 4. I couldn't believe that almost immediately he was recognising letters everywhere we went. After a little chat with the pre-school supervisor I decided to purchase the book for myself.

It contains black and white line drawings for each letter sound (42 in total) which can be photocopied and coloured in. On each page it gives an action for the sound and space to practice writing the letters.

Children have great fun doing the actions for each letter.

I have made posters from the pictures which I have put up on the wall to remind my son of what he has learnt and to encourage my younger daughter's interest.

A year later my son can now read and write many words and phrases.

This is a must for schools and parents and a great way for you to encourage your child to learn (and you can always have some fun with colouring and doing the actions too).

5.0 out of 5 stars If only every Reception class used this!, 27 Nov 2002
It works. That's all you really need know. It really works. Children learn the phonic sounds effortlessly in a way that allows them to actually USE what they have learned in reading and writing. And it progressively teaches them strategies first for getting things down on paper, and then moving towards a more regularised way of writing. I am a Year 1 teacher, and my class have learned incredibly quickly what they didn't manage to learn in the Reception class, who are beginning to use it now as well, thank goodness! It is fun, effective, and I truly believe that all Reception classes should be using this.
