This series (I imagine) was a risky venture but I'm glad they did it.
The pilot was the winner (I assume) of the series of pilots Channel 4 ran a while back.
I REALLY enjoyed the pilot but didn't think it would win (i.e., become a series) due to the VERY adult content.
I was wrong. The series won, but the content was toned down quite considerably.
I'm not sure if the pilot will be on the DVD but it deserves to be (hopefully in the 'xtras').

It may take a while for viewers to understand the characters - to be honest many of the characters warmed into their roles as the series progressed. By the time you get to the last 2 episodes, all the characters are well defined and the actors are very comfortable playing them.
Best not to compare any of the characters to Ali G. They are not lampooning urbanites, they are urbanites.

The genius is subtle. Urban viewers will appreciate the 'street-slang' of 2 of the 3 main characters as being very recognisable. By the end, 'new man' (Christopher) becomes a 'true' main character. The last 2 episodes are very good, but you'll have to have watched the earlier episodes to understand where they are coming from.
'New man' puts in some incredibly funny comedy acting performances which must have been difficult to perfect - assuming he's not really that innocent in real life.

VERY funny. VERY different.

A gem of a comedy. Superb acting and great catchphrases such as episode two "A Owl"; priceless. Cannot wait for DVD of Series 2 and Series 3 on TV.

Watched this when it was on TV ages ago. It was such a under rated series, and in my opinion hilarious! remember this was before the Inbetweeners, (and the dad chap is also in this as the shop manager).
really funny, 'high street' comedy. If you like that new ridiculous London accent that teenagers speak with now-a-days, then you find this very very funny.

quite simply one of the funniest and most biting satires of modern culture ever. The writing is great, the performances are exceptional and chav culture has never been so exposed or made to look so funny.

This is a bit of a strange one, because I can totally see where people are coming from that have perhaps seen 5 or 10 minutes of the opening or pilot episodes, heard the jafaken accents, the seemingly one-dimensional characterisation, and just gone to themselves 'huh?!'. They would be pretty much forgiven by me for thinking this was another sub-2 Pints effort (and that would take some doing) by a yoof orientated channel (e4).

Screen grotesques need not be likeable, but they must be believable to some degree - have a look at the characters in 'Bottom' for a good example, neither truely believable nor likeable, we are still rooting for them when they, for example, try to steal next doors gas supply, or try and beat the local money forger at their own game, even though we are just as entertained by their failure. This is generally because their adversaries are even more unpleasant than themselves. Phoneshop works a similar system, and by Episode 3 the characters show themselves to be a little (and only as little as is needed) less shallow and selfish than they first appeared, and start all working together as a team towards whatever menace comes in their direction; whether it be Lance's psychotic wife or the charming area manager predictably yet robustly played by the Facejacker himself. It's this that allows for the best comedy moments, and makes the show what I feel without any irony is one of the best sitcoms in years. In an industry that often shouts 'Where's the jeopardy' at scriptwriters, once you are a third into the series run, 'jeopardy' is writ large into every scene.

Very funny series punctuated with characters we have all seen and dealt with (in phone shops too). Some filthy humour but good acting and very un PC. Who'd have thought this of Sutton, but it really is so true !
