WELCOME TO THE DEADLY SKIES
Pam Am Flight 10 is heading routinely from Seattle to Tokyo when one by one its engines explode. Only brilliant work by its pilot saves the 747 and the hundreds of passengers on board....
At Pan Am headquarters, the newly revived airline is facing a serious setback--rumors of financial uncertainty have panicked Wall Street and sent stock prices and bond ratings plummeting....
At the airline's maintenance facility, a mysterious intruder has left behind evidence of possible industrial sabotage....
Since the new Pan Am has risen from the ashes of deregulation to challenge the big three U.S. airlines, nothing has gone smoothly. Now with threats from all sides, Pan Am's chief pilot Brian Murphy, its new chief financial officer Elizabeth Sterling, and international financier Creighton MacRae must work together to save the beleaguered airline--if their personal feelings don't get in the way....
"The Airport of the 1990s...A superb novel."

Not his best. 29 Dec 2011
By Lexicon
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The one thing Mr Nance does well is when he writes about action in the cockpit and the struggles of controlling a 747 jumbo as it veers off course. What he does not excel at is writing a tightly woven, action led thriller. The characters are well defined but this story gets bogged down in the politics and financial shennanigans of corporate greed and abuse of power. The runaround towards the end does nothing to quicken the pace but drags out the story for a few more chapters, which so easily could have been cutailed much sooner. Micheal Crichton's Airframe deals with aviation sabotage and is a better, well written story, which I would recommend rather than Phoenix Rising.

A GREAT REDA! 1 Jun 2001
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Phoenix Rising is the story of the born-again Pan Am, an airline that can upset some mighty investors nice profits from their monopolistic airline holdings in the US ,and they'll stop at NOTHING to stop the growing airline from entering their turf.

The book keeps you nailed to the pages, and it's REAL hard to put it down. The suspence is on TWo levels - the cabotage against the airline, and attempts to stop the airline financially, thus combining operational and managerial problems.

kept me up reading till 2am 29 Dec 1999
By R. Connon - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
John Nance has always impressed me whether in his written work or on T.V., etc... this book just helps prove that. You can tell that only an airline "insider" came up with this novel. He kept the right mix between the finincal part of things and the "down dirty" flying types of things. In the last third of the book is where it really gets exciting and keeps you on your seat till the end.

Phoenix Rising- by John J. Nance 28 Jan 2001
By Jeff Pudelski - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book was an average Nance book, not bad, not good. I enjoyed many of the flight scenes, especially the 767 stuck above the Artic Circle, but the novel at some parts felt too much like an investigative novel, or a mystery. At the end, the novel seems to end abruptly. It was a dissapointing end, but if you are an aviation insider, it may provide a better read than an outsider would have.

quick lift off 23 Jun 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
From one pilot to another it is a good read. It is apparent that Nance is writing about "what he knows," even though the plane that was used has yet to be invented...Nance makes you believe it could happen.
