4.0 out of 5 stars Solid reading with both dark elements and some humor, 11 Jul 2001
Although this is the fourth book in a series, it can easily be read as a sequel to Sullivan's "The Scorpion" - in that it picks up the overall-storyline where that book left off. As the Phoenix Clan is different from others, so does this book give readers a different look into the L5R universe, and especially a first good look at the dreaded shadowlands. The story contains darker elements pertaining to the main character's destiny, but also offers some lighter notes in the supporting cast. Sullivan makes for easy reading with a good balance between action and characterization: watch out, though, as this book has a very open ending and necessitates buying other books in the series if you want to find out what happens to the main players.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enter the Shadowlands - where even a hero can ....., 2 April 2001
Sullivan's first L5R-novel "The Scorpion" was a wonderfull entry into this magical empire of samurai and magic ... and this stiry picks up right where he left the first one. Heroes are as good as the bad guys are bad, but in this story the heroes aren't always clean-cut or untouchable ... which makes them all the more believable. Good tempo, some lighter additions amongst the characters, a first-hand description of evil personified, and an open ending that will make you come back for the next chapter ... or Sullivan's third novel in this series (you don't need to read all seven if you stick to this man's stories throughout the series).
