3.0 out of 5 stars monster on martian moon 11 Oct 2007
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Fifth in an ongoing series of audios featuring the eighth doctor who, and his latest companion, a feisty northern girl called lucie miller. Like the tv series, these audios are forty five minute long, and some are one part stories and some are two parters. There is an ongoing story arc, so it does help to hear them in order.

In this tale the tardis arrives on phobos, the moon of mars. the place has become a favourite haunt for extreme sports fanatics due to the many and deep canyons it has. But what's lurking at the bottom of one? And does the caretaker of the moon know more than he's telling?

Alas, the weakest of this batch, because the whole story is a little over familiar and not something that fresh or original. whilst the sound design tries hard to create the impression you're on another world, it's rather hard to suspend your disbelief and forget that these are actors in a studio. And the monster is of a kind that the show has done many times in the past.

What saves this one is the performance from paul mcgann, when the script touches on a darker side to the doctor. it's strong material and he rises to the acting challenge it presents superbly. creating a very memorable last scene.

So not a terrible story, but there are better ones out there.

The disc concludes with the usual ten to fifteen minutes worth of interviews with the actors involved. which are worth listening to.

4.0 out of 5 stars an original use of an old idea 27 Jan 2008
Format:Audio CD
As the series continues, I'm pleased to say the scriptwriters have, unlike the 2007 TV series, quickly introduced a sidekick for the hero and then given us a stupendous group of adventures, unlikeMartha Jones's unending, excruciating list of minor introductory adventure, establishing a dull characterin dull stories. In this extravaganzaza, the Doctor and Lucie land in a futuristic adventure park, just as attacks begin.

It starts off in slightly cliched fashion, but shoots along into a fantastic, epic tale. Withseveral twists and an earthshattering finale, in which McGann reveals fantastic talent showing the Doctor's dark side.

So not as good as Blood of the Daleks or Human Resources, but still quite a tale, even if it overdoes the messages against racism and suchlike.

5.0 out of 5 stars The pictures are better on audio 24 May 2009
By Tony Jones VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Sometimes you listen a well produced play and catches in the imagination; for me this is a stand out story as it works. It catches the mood of an extreme sports park on Phobos, particularly with the great audio track (a good mix of music, effects and plain our echo/wind). It takes a while to spot the monster, and the overall series arc is tucked away in the corner.

There is a also a moment where Lucie gets a small insight into box how alien the Doctor is, how long he has lived and what he has experienced.

For me brilliant (I have spotted that others don't agree!)

Not only did mans journey into space peak between 1969 and 1972 during which the 12 (only what ? 8 left alive) men who walked on the moon did their stuff : music also peaked during those years. The rest is just winding down and fiddling about. 15 1 hour ago
