First released in 2006, this is the fifth episode of a of the first standalone series for Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor outside of the monthly range of Big Finish releases. This is a one disc release, with a single 50 minute episode. There are some interviews with cast and crew at the end of the disc.

This is another excellent release in this range. The Doctor and Lucie arrive on Phobos, which is now a place for adrenaline junkies to go and take part in extreme sports. But just what are the monsters that they have been warned about? When dead bodies start turning up they must delve into a deep and frightening mystery.

It's a nicely paced piece, with high octane action sequences interspersed with well done, slower paced character moments. As befits the Eighth Doctor following (presumably) his adventures in the divergent Universe with Charlotte Pollard, there is a melancholic tone to the piece, and to McGann's increasingly excellent and complex portrayal of his Doctor. The big action set pieces play well to his adventurous side (and to the character of Lucie) and the grand finale really takes great advantage of the darker side of his nature. Sheridan Smith continues to impress as Lucie, and the chemistry between her and McGann is a real joy to listen to. Also of note are Timothy West and Nerys Hughes as the older members of the Phobos fraternity, who look upon the younger members almost as children. Their story is touching and played out beautifully by these two experienced actors.

It's a thrill ride of a release, 5 stars.

Fifth in an ongoing series of audios featuring the eighth doctor who, and his latest companion, a feisty northern girl called lucie miller. Like the tv series, these audios are forty five minute long, and some are one part stories and some are two parters. There is an ongoing story arc, so it does help to hear them in order.

In this tale the tardis arrives on phobos, the moon of mars. the place has become a favourite haunt for extreme sports fanatics due to the many and deep canyons it has. But what's lurking at the bottom of one? And does the caretaker of the moon know more than he's telling?

Alas, the weakest of this batch, because the whole story is a little over familiar and not something that fresh or original. whilst the sound design tries hard to create the impression you're on another world, it's rather hard to suspend your disbelief and forget that these are actors in a studio. And the monster is of a kind that the show has done many times in the past.

What saves this one is the performance from paul mcgann, when the script touches on a darker side to the doctor. it's strong material and he rises to the acting challenge it presents superbly. creating a very memorable last scene.

So not a terrible story, but there are better ones out there.

The disc concludes with the usual ten to fifteen minutes worth of interviews with the actors involved. which are worth listening to.
