Biography

When the four members of Phish talk about getting back together after spending almost five years apart, the same words keep coming up—“gratitude,” “appreciation,” “inspiring.” There’s an almost tangible sense of relief that surrounds this reunion of one of the most popular touring bands in history, and that same feeling of fulfillment comes ... 5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 5 Dec 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I wasn't sure about Phish - I bought Slip, Stitch and Pass years ago and thought yes, OK but I didn't really warm to the band. I did however really enjoy the cover of Jesus Left Chicago, especially the guitar solo. So on that basis, when I got a voucher for my birthday (so not risking my "own money" (bit tight, me), I bought this. A revelation - it is fantastic. Obviously phans already know this but it has been the start of a great journey of discovery from me. These boys really know what they are doing, and, in Trey, have a genius of Garcia-like proportions, and they don't come any higher than that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the band's best overall archival release! 21 Jun 2013
By Matthew D. Frawley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I've been a fan for almost 20 years and own many (not all) of the group's live releases. From a performance standpoint, these two shows are among the strongest they've put out. Shows from 1997 and 1998 remain very popular among fans and these were arguably the last two truly great years for Phish. These Ventura shows are rippers from beginning to end. Whereas they often overindulged in funk jams during 1997 (see Hampton and Denver releases), this show is more of a rocker. Same for the '98 show. The highlights are really too numerous to mention.

What puts this release so far ahead of others is the sound. The engineers utilized the multitrack tapes instead of the usual two track ones. The depth, clarity, ambience and balance of music and audience response here is unrivaled by any of their other releases. The drums in particular sound incredible. Whoever was involved with the sound on these discs should win an award.

I doubt any old school fans need convincing but if you're new the band and are interested in collecting live shows, this is an excellent place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic high energy Phish, that delivers! 19 Jun 2013
By Vault Productions - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If you are a Phan then you know that 1997 was a super year for Phish. The music is amazing, tight and smooth. The sound quality is pristine, as usual, paramount mixing. I have not made it to the Bonus CD yet, I'm sure it's just a good. These shows are a sure bet for any old fan like me, or a new one discovering the jam. This delivers 100%. Keep jamming!

5.0 out of 5 stars In their prime and I'm loving it 20 Jun 2013
By Brandon Boscia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is Phish at their finest. 1997-1998 was tight, funky, and full of energy. The jams wander without getting lost, but really get into some heady territory. If you are already a fan, you know why you should listen to this. If you are new to the boys, or just want to get into them, give this a listen -- you won't be disappointed. Fierce precision, the right balance of in-your-face and empty space, secret language, great setlists, and the sounchecks thrown in to boot. Do it. Do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even the sound checks are great 20 Aug 2013
By Daniel E. Fox - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is just a fantastic 6-CD set of Phish at their phinest. As other reviews have mentioned, the sound is near perfect and in particular you can hear the drums and keyboards with so much clarity. I am partial to "David Bowie" and "Punch You in the Eye," both sprawling masterpieces that sound terrific on here. A hilarious (but respectful) "Sexual Healing" and a very tight "Haley's Comet." The song choices here span their entire career, with two great versions of the Billy Breathes classic "Prince Caspian." The packaging is well-done and overall this is one of the best live Phish albums I have heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy of your groove ! 6 Sep 2013
By Halo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Not much to say here. Most Phish fans (myself included) would agree 95 through 00 were the best years for live Phish. The Ventura set is no different. This is probably my third favorite live album(s) from Trey and the guys. Slip Stich and Pass & Live at Madison Square Garden New Years 95 coming in at 1st and 2nd. Anyway, if your already a fan and are thinking about picking this up . . . Go for it ! The band sounds great, the music is tight and not to mention Ventura includes what is probably my favorite live version of Bathtub Gin.
