5.0 out of 5 stars CAN'T BE MISSED BY ANY PIANO LOVER 22 Feb 2009
By FRENCH JAZZ LOVER - Published on
This DVD is quite unfair to Duke JORDAN : his playing is very good, with his light touch (after 30 years playing piano, wish mine were only 20% as good), his subtle harmonic sense and his continuous swing.

But Phineas NEWBORN is there at the top of his creativity, which means that some of the best ever jazz piano has been video taped. And it could be the best jazz piano ever taped. All his tracks could harldy, if ever, be improved.
For piano players, and despite a rather poor video quality, there's a lot to learn from Phineas' fingering. I strongly recommend the beautiful "Lush Life", where Phineas perfectly express the sadness of the song, and the tremendous, almost alien, "Blues For Left Hand Only".

Buy this DVD, you'll become addicted to it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Two jazz masters 2 Oct 2011

The video of Duke Jordan is excellent, looking fresh and clean. He has been somewhat overshadowed, with other jazz pianists readily accessible. It is a pleasure to see him finally receive the attention he should have been given.

What is there to say about Phineas? Although the video quality is not as clean and crisp as the viewer would wish, there is nothing to complain about with his playing... which is perfectly clean and crisp. Whether you pronounce his name as Phin-e-as or as Phine-as, there is no question that he must be pronounced as one of the top 10 jazz pianists of all time. There are too few videos available of his playing, and this DVD accesses more than I have seen available elsewhere.

For the jazz piano lover, this DVD is a "must own".
