Product Description

Product Description

Philosophy probes the fundamental questions about human life and the universe of which we are a part. It examines the language we use and the basis upon which we hold our beliefs. This book provides an accessible introduction to the work of some of the world's greatest philosophers, and shows how their ideas have shaped the way in which we all think. It covers the main areas of philosophy, including the philosophy of mind, religion, politics and science. The book uses examples and situations to present ideas clearly to the reader, and defines the key words throughout the text to aid the reader in their understanding of the subject. It also includes the differences between Eastern and Western Philosophy, whole chapters on the Philosophy of language and Feminist Philosophy, and comprehensive sections on logic and aesthetics.

Excellent 24 Oct 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book, which tackles subjects very well, and unlike other books you could go to, it is staright forward and doesn't confuse with complicated language. It helps tackle subjects including Gods existance along side the existance of evil competently and almost guides you throguh your track of thought. Yet the ease of communicating points does not take away from the valuable well thought out and argued content. An easy to follow book that has been a must for my A-Level course.

Nice Panoramic review 28 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
This book has a good panoramic vue of anglosaxon philosophy. One important think I found here is the fact that it is really updated. I also enjoyed its language, british. Very understandable.

Impressive 5 April 2000
By Randy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Mel Thompson's book Philosophy is one of the best books on the subject I have read. He approaches the matter in a writing style that is way far from the pompous, rigid, holier-than-thou method some writers use. His writing is lucid, captivating, fun and educational (two words which are rarely found together)...He discusses concisely yet sufficiently and thoroughly about philosophic concepts and highlights the most important parts of each concept and elucidates them masterfully. This book will appeal to anyone from the member of the philosophical clerisy to the ordinary layperson. A truly interesting read.

This book was surprisingly entertaining to read, as well as being very informative for its concision.
More than accomplishes what it sets out to achieve.
