This text provides an excellent introduction to a complicated and, for many students, daunting subject matter. Contrary to the views expressed by previous reviewers, it actually deals with different philosophical approaches underlying social scientific research in a fairly open and unbiased way, examining both their central tenets and relevant criticism. It is certainly a challenging text, but it also manages to synthesise the approaches it discusses in a fairly accessible way. As such, it constitutes an ideal starting point for engagement with the philosophy of social science, as long as readers are willing to leave behind possible anti-sociological biases and engage with new topics with an open mind.
