4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and useful, but not for beginners, 18 April 2011

This review is from: Philosophy of Science: 5 Questions (Paperback)
While introductory philosophy of science books will continue to focus on certain core topics (demarcation, explanation, realism, paradigms, etc.), this book provides windows into what academic philosophers of science are actually doing for their research. The book includes contributions from 18 philosophers of diverse backgrounds, many of which are fairly well known, so I think the book provides a reasonably representative sample of people in the field.

The overall conclusion is quite clear: philosophy of science must situate itself in messy interaction with scientific practice, the details of scientific findings, technology, the humanities, social goals and justice, politics, and other facets of human cultures. This means that philosophers of science have a very diverse and evolving spectrum of questions and issues they can choose to focus on, with at least some interdisciplinary collaboration being almost a necessity. This situation fragments the field of philosophy of science, but it also gives philosophers the opportunity to make real contributions, rather than just being armchair analysts.

I can recommend this book to people who already have some background in philosophy of science and are interested in getting a sense of what academics in the field are up to. If you don't have that background, I recommend starting with an introductory book first, and there are many good ones to choose from.
