Product Description

Product Description
"Philosophy for Life" is a bold call for the practice of philosophy in our everyday lives. Philosopher and writer Rupert Read explores a series of important and often provocative contemporary political and cultural issues from a philosophical perspective, arguing that philosophy is not a body of doctrine, but a practice, a vantage point from which life should be analysed and, more importantly, acted upon. "Philosophy for Life" is a personal journey that explores four key areas of society today: Politics, Religion, Art, and the Environment. Taking tangible examples from modern politics, from climate change to the war on terror, and culture, from Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy to the poetry of TS Eliot, Read shows that philosophy is already an active part of today's world. This captivating and timely book offers a philosophical response to some of the key questions facing today's society and encourages us to use philosophy as a kind of therapy. "Philosophy for Life" shows that we can improve our perspective on the world and our place in it by doing philosophy everyday.

4.0 out of 5 stars An honest and really thought-provoking book, 5 Oct 2007
Rupert Read has criticized me in print in the past, and I have criticised him in print too... and I certainly don't agree with everything that he says in this his latest book; ...but I am really glad to have read the book. It has something serious to say about the issues of our time, and it is written with verve and - accessible - philosophical sophistication.
I think the idea of philosophy for life -- philosophy on the side of life, as he puts it -- is really a neat one. And I think his essays in this book on art and literature are bang-on. He is onto the psychological dimensions of 'Lord of the Rings', for example -- I wish I had written some of that, in my memoir...
Read is trying to bring out the LOVE of wisdom element in philo-sophia. Good luck to him. And he is honest enough in the book to admit when he doesn't have all the answers, and when it is hard to just stay 'philosophical'.
Honesty, in my book, is a great great virtue. So, though I can't sign up to every word that Read says, I'm very glad to have read what Read has written. I would recommend this book to anyone genuinely interested in reflecting on life, or in how life can be improved.

1.0 out of 5 stars One to avoid, 6 Sep 2007
This is an awful book. It's dogma masquerading as philosophy. Purporting to present a view of philosophy deriving from Wittgenstein, it avoids any attempt at reason and argument and presents controversial standpoints as unquestioned truths emerging from supposed 'philosophical' insight. The author does the attempt to revive interest in Wittgenstein a grave disservice with this garbage.
