Christian Philosophy from a Reformational Perspective 3 Mar 2011
By Ben House - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Anyone who is serious about Christian thought and the field of philosophy should tackle this book. Note, however, that this is not a simple introductory history of the key philosophers or introduction to the major ideas of philosophy. D.F.M. Strauss is a professor of philosophy from South Africa and is one of the world's leading experts on the philosophy of Herman Dooyeweerd. If you are a Christian and a serious reader (or student) in the area of philosophy and have not heard of Dooyeweerd, go back to the starting line. A Dutchman from the 20th century, Dooyeweerd pioneered a whole school of Christian thought in the field of philosophy. He had a great influence directly on such Christian thinkers as Cornelius Van Til and H.R. Rookmaaker. Others who have been influenced in great measure or lesser measure include Roy Clouser, Francis Schaeffer, R.J. Rushdoony, Calvin Seerveld, and Nancy Pearcey. Strauss, as noted above, is an heir to the Dooyeweerd legacy.
A good overview of recent discussions in Christian Philosophy 27 Aug 2011
By Quistius - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Please excuse my bad English. I am not a native speaker. This book is a very comprehensive introduction in the so-called "Philosophy of the Cosmonomic Idea". Moreover, it pays attention to recent discussions and developments within the international community of philosophers which are thinking further in the line of the originator of the mentioned philosophy and it goes in debate with philosophers of other "streams". The mentioned philosophy is an orthodox protestant philosophy which was developed in the first decades of the 20th century by the Dutch philosopher Herman Dooyeweerd (Wijsbegeerte der Wetsidee). Despite its protestant roots however also Roman Catholic thinkers are convinced of the fruitfullness of the philosophy of Dooyeweerd. This philosophy has had more influence in the USA, Korea, Canada and New Sealand than in Europe. For Dooyeweerd the core part of his philosophy was the transcendental critique of theorethical thought with which he thought to be able to convince philosophers of many different streams (in his days especially the Neo-Kantian philosophers) that all theoretical thinking is "driven" by a so-called "ground motive",(more or less a methaphysical preoccupation)although philosophers are not always aware of this or accept it. However, it turned out that many of his "disciples" find this part of his philosophy the least convincing. Another crucial notion in this philosophy, the so-called "modes of being" have been much more widely accepted as very fruitfull in all disciplines of philosophy (philosophy of justice, philosophy of technique and many others. Prof Danie Straus has written a very comprehensive book that can serve as an introduction into this philosophy as well as an overview of the latest developments.
