David Webster explores the notion of desire as found in the Buddhist Pali Canon. Beginning by addressing the idea of a 'paradox of desire', whereby we must desire to end desire, the varieties of desire that are articulated in the Pali texts are examined. A range of views of desire, as found in Western thought, are presented as well as Hindu and Jain approaches. An exploration of the concept of ditthi(view or opinion) is also provided, exploring the way in which 'holding views' can be seen as analogous to the process of desiring. Other subjects investigated include the mind-body relationship, the range of Pali terms for desire, and desire's positive spiritual value. A comparative exploration of the various approaches completes the work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philosophy 17 Jun 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have just read a pre-release copy of this and, despite not being an academic or philosopher, found it fascinating and very enjoyable. It is, no doubt, excellent for the specialist but is also full of interesting and relevant insights for readers who are new to reading philosophy. Concepts are well-explained and examples are chosen aptly and are easy to understand. The lucid prose style is a delight to read and very accessible.
If you haven't yet ordered a copy, I would - its expensive, but it really is worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Desired learning. 26 Feb 2005

As a non-specialist in Buddhist thought, I wondered if this work might be too esoteric for me, but was pleasantly surprised to find it was an intriguing read, with clear explanations of specific details and a really fascinating line of argument. I bought the book as a gift, but ended up reading it all before sending it to the friend who'd requested it. If you are interested in the human condition this book is a 'must read'.

An excellent read for anyone interested in Bhuddism or even philosophy in general. ALthough specialised, it is accessible to a 'lay' reader and raises some fascinating points. Worth the time and trouble to get hold of!
