Book Description

12 Jan 2012 0199694664 978-0199694662 Reprint
In recent years, some of the world's leading philosophers have held forth on their favorite topics on the immensely popular website philosophybites.com. This remarkably popular site has had to date some 12.5 million downloads, and is listened to all over the globe. Philosophy Bites brings together the twenty-five best interviews from this hugely successful website. Leading philosophers-including Simon Blackburn, Alain de Botton, Will Kymlicka, Alexander Nehamas, and more than twenty others-discuss a wide range of philosophical issues in a surprisingly lively, informal, and personal way.

Here Peter Singer argues forcefully for vegetarianism, Anthony Appiah discusses cosmopolitanism, and Stephen Law shows why it is unreasonable to believe in an all-powerful, all-good deity. Time, infinity, evil, friendship, animals, wine, sport, tragedy-all of human life is here. And as these bite-sized interviews reveal, often the most brilliant philosophers are eager and able to convey their thoughts, simply and clearly, on the great ideas of philosophy. Publishers Weekly called the volume "thoughtful and highly readable," concluding that "these bite-size dialogues add up to a surprisingly substantial whole."

4.0 out of 5 stars pulsing, pacey philisophy! 24 Aug 2010
By J. DOUGLAS TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This is a brilliant documented composition of 25 philosophers on 25 incredibly diverse topics from ethics to metaphysics to aesthetics. This is lively, engaging and a dash-highbrow! The whole gamut of life ranging from infinity, evil, friendship, animals, tragedy and wine is covered here... from their brilliant podcasts and all their illuminating conversations are recorded in print for the first time...... This is the fruit of three years labours, where David Edmonds and Nigel Warburton have challenged some of the world's leading philosophers in over a hundred conversations and their accompanying success of seven-million downloads!

These bite-sized interviews reveal, often the most brilliant philosophers are eager and able to convey their thoughts, simply and clearly, on the great ideas of philosophy. Engaging, personal, and illuminating material! Uniquely brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging Philosophy 29 Sep 2010
Format:Hardcover
David Edmonds and Nigel Warburton have now carried out well over a hundred audio podcast interviews with philosophers. This remarkable series has now attracted more than eight million hits, demonstrating the potential popularity of philosophy when made available in an accessible form. This selection of twenty-five of those interviews in written form demonstrates just why the series has been so successful.

The volume is intelligently arranged. It begins with the struggling attempts of the interviewees to answer the question, 'What is Philosophy?'. Perhaps their difficulties were related to the range of topics and approaches covered by the subject area, as the main part of the book then illustrates. Divided into the five broad categories, 'Ethics', 'Politics', 'Metaphysics and Mind', 'Aesthetics' and 'God, Atheism and the Meaning of Life', each interview in each section provides food for thought. Of course, much of the credit for this goes to the interviewees, most of whom express their ideas with admirable clarity. But at least as much goes to Edmonds and Warburton, both philosophers themselves. Because thy understand the field so well, the questions go straight to the point, probing the respondents to define the essence of their distinctive arguments.

Readers are bound to have their own favourites and it is invidious to choose, but I found the following particularly engaging: Michael Sandel on Sport and Enhancement, Miranda Fricker on Credibility and Discrimination, Tim Crane on Mind and Body, Alain de Botton on the Aesthetics of Architecture, and Don Cupitt on Non-Realism about God. But the whole book is an excellent read and I look forward to the next volume.

A fascinating bitesize introduction to philosophy.

Interviews from some of the best known philosophers on some of their specialist topics.

Their are 5 sections: Ethics; politics; metaphysics & mind; aesthetics; and finally, god religion and atheism.

There are 5 interviews on topics in each of these sections and a lot of ground is covoured in a short time, making this and ideal book for introducing philosophy and giving you names and concepts that can be explored further.

Peter Singer is interviewed on the ethics of dealing with animals. Wendy Brown attacks the concept of Tolerance which, she contends is being used in preference of the true ideals of acceptance and equality. Hugh Mellor provides a good introduction to questions about the nature of time, this counter intuative and mind bending interview may change your whole conception of the world without appealing to 'new age' concepts. Allain de Botton, who i know as a TV mathamatician has some very interesting thoughts on Architechture. In the final chapter an interview with John Cottingham entitled The Meaning of Life was unsurprisingly perhaps, a thought provoking few pages which touch on christian thought, existentialism and the way ideas on how to live our lives deal with vast contingencies upon which our individual lives depend.

I probably would have given this book five stars if it had a section on the ethics of large companies with UK revenues of say Ģ7 billion paying Ģ2 million in corporation tax. Not naming any names, but i don't want to say Nile, it's that other HUGE river. Good book, shame about the lack of pieces on corporate tax evasion.
