Essential purchase for anyone with an interest in aesthetics,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Philosophy of Art: Readings Ancient and Modern (Paperback)
I feel I must write a quick review of this book because I think it is actually really rather great. It is an anthology of famous (and infamous) texts regarding the philosophy of arts/ aesthetics. In its abundant 500+ pages it covers such diverse writers as Plato, Wordsworth, Nietzcshe and Freud - and this is only in the first section (there are four). Why this book isnt more popular or esteemed than it already is is a mystery to me. Of course, if you have no interest in philosophy or aesthetics then I do NOT recommend this anthology to you, but if you do have such an interest then I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Aesthetics for the True Student,
By InfoGradStudent - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Philosophy of Art: Readings Ancient and Modern (Paperback)
This book is filled with primary texts. It does not contain a guide per se to understanding each selection. However, I think this is exactly what is needed in a philosophy anthology. The selections were definitely limited to ancient to modern texts and this leaves out post modern writings on aesthetics. I enjoyed the book it contained a good range of thinkers from Tolstoy, Hume and Kant.
