Product Description

Product Description

Philosophy for AS is the definitive textbook for students of the current AQA Advanced Subsidiary Level. Structured closely around the examination specifications, it covers the two units of the AS Level in an exceptionally clear and student-friendly style. As an invitation to philosophy, the book encourages and enables students to engage philosophically with the following syllabus topics:

  • reason and experience
  • Why should I be governed?
  • Why should I be moral?
  • the idea of God
  • persons
  • knowledge of the external world
  • tolerance
  • the value of art
  • God and the world
  • the debate about free will and determinism.

Each chapter contains an introduction to the basic ideas, arguments and objections of the issue, and a development section, which clarifies the previous material, introduces more complex ideas, and encourages students to link up ideas and draw new implications. To aid student learning and revision, each chapter includes:

  • comprehension questions to test core knowledge

  • discussion questions to deepen understanding

  • 'going further' sections for advanced study

  • cross-references to help students make connections

  • helpful summaries and a glossary.

In addition, a chapter on exam preparation contains a wealth of helpful hints and tips on revision and exam techniques.

Written by an experienced philosopher and A Level consultant, Philosophy for AS is an essential course book for all students of AS Level philosophy.

I bought this book as a stand-in for the 'official AQA' revision guide on seeing the numerous poor reviews it had in comparison to this book. I still haven't had a chance to look over that one, but what I can say is that this book is excellent. Last Friday, I had literally no understanding of half the syllabus, having self-learnt only Unit 1, so I ordered this in a desperate bid to buck up my knowledge for an exam the Tuesday of the next week.

Well, here I am; exam finished, and whilst I'll have a few months to wait before learning my mark, I certainly felt like an A grade candidate. The book equipped me with not only the tools for breaking down the subject's notoriously cryptic questions, but also set me up with a sound knowledge of all the relevant arguments, allowing me to ride my discussion effortlessly to its conclusion. The way the book is set out, it's not so much a case of blandly learning who said what; instead, it's an enigmatic debate that actually gets very interesting, even for a sleep deprived crammer like myself!

If you're a student or a parent of a student whom you know is having difficulty with the subject, or simply needs a concise syllabus summary to remedy some questionable time management, then I heartily recommend you put an order in for one of these. Just remember: willpower is still required!

As an AQA examiner and teacher of the course, this book is the best in the market place. It is not dumbed down but written in a way that is less obtuse than the 'official' AQA book which needs a the attention of a good editor.

As a home schooled student with less tutor support than most I look for books that are detailed in helping me with my studies. This book was fantastic and easy to understand. It also follows the AQA A specification perfectly.

I use this book for tutoring A-level students and I have to say it is very good. There tends to be more content on each topic than is provided by the "official" AQA textbook, and... Read more

To be or not to be
Would have preferred to get a book for AS and A2 combined, as this means just more expense next year, but it is clearly laid out and easy to read.
