Product Description

Professor Roger Trigg, Founding Chair of the British Philosophical Association

'This comprehensive survey of major philosophical themes in the syllabus fulfils a real need, and will be an invaluable tool for study.'

Product Description

Philosophy for AS and A2 is the definitive textbook for students of Advanced Subsidiary or Advanced Level courses, structured directly around the specification of the AQA - the only exam board to offer these courses. Following a lively foreword by Nigel Warburton, author of Philosophy: The Basics, a team of experienced teachers devote a chapter each to the six themes covered by the syllabus:

AS
* Theory of Knowledge
* Moral Philosophy
* Philosophy of Religion

A2
* Philosophy of Mind
* Political Philosophy
* Philosophy of Science

Each of the six themed chapters includes:
* A list of key concepts, to introduce students to the topic
* Bite-size sections corresponding exactly to the syllabus topics
* Actual past exam questions from previous years
* Suggested discussion questions to promote debate
* Text-boxes with helpful summaries, case-studies and examples
* An annotated further reading list directing students towards the best articles, books and websites
* A comprehensive glossary, providing a handy reference point

There is a final chapter on essay writing and exam preparation, designed to help students get to grips with the examination board requirements.

Fairly shallow reading 13 July 2006
Format:Paperback
Although this book explains the basic concepts in an easy-to-grasp and swift way, from my own experience, it wouldn't be advisable to rely solely on it. Use it as a template and then expand on the concepts which can be found in more depth in the Understanding Philosophy AQA for AS/A2 Level (AS and A2 are seperate textbooks). By using the two as complementary sources you will be more successful. To be blunt it is a short and therefore shallow textbook, which doesn't really go into enough detail to allow you the highest grades.

If you can afford to, my advice would be to buy this as well as the previously mentioned textbook(s). However, if you're not fortunate enough to be able to dish out £30 on Philosophy textbooks, then I strongly suggest you leave this and go for the more thorough and comprehensive 'Understanding Philosophy AQA for AS/A2 Level'. That will ensure your A grades. If, on the other hand, you aren't too worried about getting those top grades in philosophy (A or B), then Philosophy for AS and A2 goes into ample detail.

Please remember that this is a thin textbook which covers both years of A-Level, although doesn't provide any sections on the texts. Good luck!

Difficult 2 Feb 2012

Prior to reading this book, I had toyed with the idea of doing a Philosophy A Level, but not any more. It's very difficult. I found it hard to understand large amounts of this book, my only previous experience of philosophy having been reading Nigel Warburton's "Philosophy-The Basics" and "Philosophy-The Classics". This AS/A2 book is a big step up from both of these introductions and while I could follow Warburton's books , I struggled with this one. I found the subject matter of the book complicated and dull and I am now convinced that I wouldn't have a chance of passing an A Level in the subject , unless I went back and studied the subject full time getting assistance and advice from qualified teachers. At my age I have no interest in that. I would recommend this book to anyone considering doing a Philosophy A Level. The concepts described aren't easy and ,although I have a basic knowledge of most of them , this book takes them to a level I can't follow.

The A-level course has changed since this book was published, meaning that not all parts will be relevant to someone who is studying A-level and not interested in reading beyond that. However, if you wish to achieve top grades at A-level is is useful to read something other than the official textbooks for the course, and this is useful for that purpose.
