Book Description

13 Nov 2008 Oxford World's Classics
An eloquent and sometimes even erotic book, the Philosophical Enquiry was long dismissed as a piece of mere juvenilia. However, Burke's analysis of the relationship between emotion, beauty, and art form is now recognized as not only an important and influential work of aesthetic theory, but also one of the first major works in European literature on the Sublime, a subject that has fascinated thinkers from Kant and Coleridge to the philosophers and critics of today. This is the only available edition of the work. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Review

'It is concisely and efficiently annotated, and its vivid introduction brings out, among other things, the deep interrelations between Burke's views on art and his political outlook, even in this early work.' Claude Rawson, London Review of Books 'must be one of the most useful additions to the Oxford World's Classics series for some time' Robin Jarvis, Bristol Polytechnic

5.0 out of 5 stars It's on the kindle too?! 19 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm using this book as a key text in my dissertation so finding out theres a kindle version too is great! It means I can do quick word searches to find specific quotes that I need as I don't always remember to take the physical book on my travels!
Great book too! Hard to read the first time (as it was written in the 18th century), but once you've read it once or twice you get used to the way it's written.

Plus at under 4 it's a no brainer to have a second copy on my laptop/kindle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Burke 2 Jan 2013
By sarbern
Format:Paperback
Interesting writings on beauty and the sublime. Although I do find Burke's writing to be a bit heavy for me personally but it's not unreadable.
It was very useful for my essay though! Full of great stuff, when you get past the dense language!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting idea 15 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
This book puts forward the interesting proposition that it is obscurity and suggestiveness, rather than clarity, which captures the imagination. This argument could be applied to philosophy as well as beauty.

The book quality's pretty poor so you wouldn't, say, give it as a gift) but it's hard to find this book so recommended if you're particularly keen to get your hands on it.

This is an amazing Book. I love Burke, his theories are so profound and also so relevant even to us today. Click here even to see how they are still used.
