Product Description

"Philomena is a story quite unlike any other. At times it’s a classic adventure story, at others a brilliantly realised fantasy. It can enthral young readers with its buoyant fun, and still entice adults with its depth and themes.

It’s like The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, but more innocent;

similar to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, but way more Catholic;

almost a Pirates of the Caribbean in book-form, but more hopeful and less wet!"

~Thomas Saywell, CatholicFiction.Net

The shipmasters of Cor Nova rule the sky. With only the wind, gravity, and the white vapor that lifts their wooden ships sunward, they soar through the skies in search of fortune and adventure. But, a storm is gathering on the horizon, one that threatens to bring the freedom of all the people of the beautiful nation under attack.

For hundreds of years, the Sovereigns have ruled Cor Nova with justice, but a strange madness has invaded the mind of the Sovereign Philocrates, turning the once-peaceful nation into an oppressive dictatorship. Masked soldiers stalk the streets of her cities, undesirables disappear without a trace, and the nights are lit with towering piles of burning books.

Through a mysterious rebel organization known only as the Bookkeepers, Basil, a youth with a gift for medicine, learns that he alone can save Cor Nova from Philocrates.

With the help of young merchant shipmaster Cyprian Fields, his trustworthy (and decidedly colorful) crew, and a battered merchant freighter named Philomena, Basil sets out on an adventure that will change his world forever. As the people of Cor Nova turn to him as the last hope in a dark night, Basil discovers that the only way to overcome great evil is to tap into the power that lies within.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philomena 1 Aug 2013
By emjuc
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I loved this book - bought on a whim knowing nothing about it (as a present for a friend called Philomena), and had to buy myself a copy too. Don't want to ruin the plot, but it's a fantasy adventure set in an imaginary world, not often my cup of tea, but it carried me along with its enthusiasm and vivid descriptions - I could feel and sense the world of Cor Nova. Would love to see it made into a film - would absolutely lend itself to 'Lord of the Rings' treatment. Beautifully produced book, too; loved the cover design, the feel of it, the choice of print and paper - much better than many books from large publishing houses. For a self-published novel, very impressive, although it did deserve another proof-reading. However, don't let that detract from a fantastically enjoyable read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Flying galleons ? 11 April 2014
By Waltzer

Not exactly what I expected, but a very pleasant surprise! It's another fantasy world - evil all-powerful ruler, with his "evil" entourage and unknown brother attempting to take the country back to the earlier great days. With flying sailing ships, monsters and spirits of the forest, it is a good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Could only put it down when batteries on kindle died! 23 April 2013

Of all the books on my side table vying for my scarce reading time, Philomena was always picked first. I enjoyed the detailed descriptions that brought this different world alive in my mind and the quirky personalities of the characters. This book takes some unexpected twists and turns with a surprising finish that made it hard to put down, especially towards the end. My only advice is to take notes in the first part of the book of all the names as they will somehow have significant meaning at some point in the book, so much so that when I got to the end of the book I realized that I'd have to read it over in order to greater appreciate the intricacies of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A royal romp. 23 Nov 2013

An amazingly well crafted story for a first book. It was enthralling to the point that I was strongly tempted to finish reading whilst driving (but I didn't). I hope that the author will write further books set in this world. This book is a free addition to my library, but would be well worth purchasing.

It has been a while since I've read fantasy. Philomena has brought me back home. Characters that enticed me, settings that lured me, and a plot that held together through it all. A glorious journey into the power of love and friendship. We'll done!
3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of typos 11 Jun 2014
By NANCY PALMER - Published on Amazon.com

The story was very enjoyable, but the typos seemed to increase the further you read. One example was " he put his hands between his head" This book would be enjoyed by young Science Fiction fans.
