Amazon.co.uk Review
Possibly the second most historically soul-centric US city (after Detroit, obviously), this collection of Philadelphia R n' B shows the progression that today's artists have made away from the likes of Gamble and Huff. Today, technology has caught up and for the most part, the beats here are sequenced and sampled rather than live. Whether this is a disadvantage to the sound is a matter of opinion, but it's obvious that the move away from the nimble melodicism of the trademark Philly sound makes the songs seem rather sluggish in places. That isn't to say it's bad. There are definite highlights from the likes of The Roots and Jazzy Jeff, as well as sterling efforts from lesser names like The Philadelphia Experiment, all of which display the kind of inventiveness that can make modern soul as pioneering as its predecessors, with lyrically and musically interesting cuts. However, many of the songs here succumb to an overlong running time that sees their initial appeal diminish over the space of up to six minutes. For fans of the genre, this album is certainly recommended, but for the casual buyer, the title is a mild faux-pas, given the rich history of the city.
