This CD contains a 'who's who' of musical geniuses behind the scenes: Thom Bell, Norman Harris, Stan Watson, Bobby Eli, Mervin & Melvin Steals, Mystro & Lyric aka Touch Of Class, Alan Felder, Ron `Have Mercy' Kersey, Norman Bergen, Grey & Hanks, Reid Whitelaw & of course Tom Moulton.
Listen to First Choice's "Smarty Pants"---the track has more than doubled the length, now finally the first full length 12" Version!!
Their "One Step Away" comes alive with a longer instrumental intro and you can hear the quality and care from these 2 tracks that were recorded 38 years ago and that's NOT a typo, it IS 38 years! Check out the build up at the break--delicious!!!
Tom does not go out of his way to change a song - he simply brings the best out in it. Listen to Ultra High Frequency's "Incompatible"---that instrumental break was right there in the track in 1973, it's just that nobody was able to hear it....until now!
Check out Loose Change's "Straight From The Heart" and you will hear more subtle changes - brighter percussion, those swaying violins, clearer vocals; all elements much better than the original 1979 Mix.
Also their "Rising Cost Of Love" now turns into a sleazy jazzy soul number which will work perfectly for today's audiences and reach a market that the original could only dream of.
Philly heroes Moment Of Truth get the Tom Moulton treatment here also. Executive Producer Reid Whitelaw pulled out "I'm Hopelessly In Love With You" & "Love At First Sight" from his vaults and Tom has transformed both songs into beautiful disco magic with the grandeur that they truly deserve.
The Quickest Way Out, a group that I used to follow since 1975 on Philly Groove Records (via Warner Brothers at the time), has 2 fantastic tracks here: "Who Am I" & "Beware She's Pulling My Strings". I used to play these like crazy back in the mid `70's and now that Tom Moulton has done his magic, no doubt I'll be playing them again. They sound even better than I remember!
Now the killer & my absolute favorite on this set is Terry Collins' "Action Speaks Louder Than Words"; a true funky soul Philly Sound number from 1973 that is now more that triple the original length. It was hard to find anyway and now with a fantastic remix I predict that it will be the sublime hit of the summer (like Heaven & Hell's "Whatcha Gonna Do" from Vol 1)
And the mastering is 100% better than the first volume, thank goodness!!!!
I am thrilled that this music is FINALLY being released!! We need to keep it alive, vibrant & heard today--THIS IS REAL MUSIC!
