Being handheld means you can blend directly in your pan.

Experience innovative ProMix blending technology with the Philips Jamie Oliver blender

"Being handheld means you can blend directly in your pan, whether it’s a pot or even a deep roasting tray for the perfect gravy. It’s perfect for soups or for whizzing small batches of anything from salad dressings to pesto".

"For me, it's about encouraging more people to enjoy cooking and to feel as comfortable and confident as possible using this kit. And, ultimately, I set out to design a range that I would be genuinely happy to have and use in my own kitchen. Every piece of kit from the Jamie's Tools range by Philips Jamie Oliver has a splash of lovely cornflower blue, the colour I chose to match the clean retro shapes we've used. This stuff is meant to be shown off, not hidden away in cupboards" Jamie O.

From the early days as the Naked Chef Jamie Oliver has spread himself far and wide. With restaurants everywhere, cookbooks and TV shows galore is this latest set of kitchen utensils spreading just a little too thin? I was intrigued to get involved and find out.

My first impressions of this handblender were good, the unit itself looks good and feels solidly built unlike some of the previous units that I've tried. There is a good solid feel to the top of the unit and all the various accessories look well made and suitable for the job with a cable to attach the main base unit to the plug being short but not preventatively so. I therefore got down to some action with each of the three attachments:

    - Blender attachment - this is a solid metal unit that feels well build and comes with a wavy bottom rather than the usual holes which means that generally it feels more solid. It also detaches and washes nicely in the dishwasher to save any painful cleaning processes - a must have for any modern blender. My only criticism with this part of it is something that affects all three different attachments, that the motor itself is almost too powerful and I can imagine people either having things blending too much, making a mess while trying to use a smaller or fuller jug or even not being able to keep control of the thing due to the two power settings both being quite powerful.
    - Chopper Attachment - I attempted to use this one in chopping up some biscuits to use as the base for a cheesecake. While this did a good job it just wasn't big enough, taking only around 2 biscuits at a time while meant that it probably took a lot longer than just breaking them up manually.

    *UPDATE* Jan 2013
To compare, I had a look at this Kenwood version which I'd bought to be used in a commercial kitchen: Kenwood HB724 Triblade Hand Blender. The Kenwood appears to have many benefits over this Phirips and also addresses many of the issues in my original review.

    The Kenwood:
    DOES have many speed selections
DOES have rubber feet on BOTH the chopper and the jug
DOES have a larger chopper to accommodate more ingredients
ALSO has a potato ricer (mashes without pulverising)
ALSO has a plastic blending stick for use in non-stick pans

I have nothing against Philips (respect is due for inventing the Compact Disc) but the Kenwood looks like a better option in many respects. It is also likely to be cheaper.

    *Original review*

The kit comprises: Main motor unit, chopping mill, whisk attachment and blending attachment ('metal bar!'). And there's a tall container/jug in which to do your blending. Build quality looks good.

Also included are some recipe cards with a smirking Mr Oliver on the front sporting heavy make-up (oh dear, now I've lost my appetite).

The kit arrives in almost completely recyclable packaging.

Attachments are interchanged by simultaneausly pressing buttons on opposite sides of the motor unit. This seems an easy but secure enough system.

    CHOPPER
The guide suggests the chopper is good for onions, nuts, bread etc. For my Christmas nutroast I needed onions, pistachios and mushrooms doing. Mushies and nuts were actually very good and came out looking like crumbled cork.

My wife's been using this stick blender for several months and rates it better than certain others that she's used as it feels sturdy in use and does a good job at each of its functions of blending, chopping and whisking (for which the appropriate attachments have already been supplied).

The motor is powerful enough to get through all the little jobs she does (she has a separate food processor for the bigger ones) but it did take a little getting used to as bowl contents can quite easily slop over the side, which I can testify first hand too also (and is the reason she `banned' me from using it again! At least, when she's around). If there is a downside to the unit it is that it only has two power settings instead of a variable one, which I think for the money would not be too unreasonable to ask for, especially as this is more pricey than most.

That said, it's not failed yet, and doesn't tire my wife's arms out the way other, cheaper ones have (but she's also a Jamie fan so she's not completely unbiased!). All in all, even for the extra cost, this blender gets a recommendation from us.

I'm sometimes a little suspicious of consumer goods which trade off a celebrity name, but this excellent kitchen gadget is just the kind of thing a working cook would find invaluable. I got mine just in time for the Christmas cooking marathon, and it proved its worth in no time. It's easy to assemble and clean (although not every part of it will go in the dishwasher) and comprises a handheld blender, a whisk, a liquidiser goblet and a compact chopper.

I used the main blender tool to make soup - ideal where you want the ingredients to remain semi-recognisable rather than just reducing the whole thing to a homogenous pulp. You can blend the soup right there in the saucepan rather than transferring it messily into a food processor, and you can blend as much or as little as you like. The whisk attachment proved its worth with a batch of home-made ice cream - I had the double cream at the soft peak stage in no time and it would also be ideal for eggs. The chopper did sterling duty on pistachio nuts as well as various herbs (chopped super-finely in seconds) and even roughly chopped a sliced lemon with no problem. The liquidiser jug is ideal for quickly mixing sauces, shakes or smoothies.

The whole thing is sturdily made and looks like it will last forever. A brilliantly designed gadget for everyday use!
