The Philips VR550 Stereo VCR player boasts Digital Studio Picture Control for excellent playback performance, ensuring your favourite programmes are recorded on tape in the highest quality. With this comes the new Turbo Drive Deck, which permits ultra-fast rewind and gives accurate tape-positioning on it's on-screen display.

And not only do you get improved picture and sound quality with its 4 video heads (rather than the nominal 2), but with Nicam stereo for recording and playback you get a far crisper, clearer sound. As well as this, the NTSC playback facility allows video cassettes recorded in the NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) system, e.g. from the USA, to be played back via a compatible PAL TV.

Other features include automatic Long Play, one-touch recording, 2 Scart connections and an on-screen display, making the Philips VR550 Stereo VCR player an impressive and great-value video recorder.

    This is quite a good VCR, offering useful features like NTSC playback, 2 SCART sockets and digital studio picture control.
    The digital studio picture control is quite useful especially if you have a large collection of old VHS tapes as it optimises the quality of such tapes. Recording and playback quality is good, however the instructions provided are poor. I'm still at a loss as to what 'Follow TV' is all about for example.
    One reviewer mentioned that connecting this VCR to a satellite or cable box is a nightmare.You just need to be connecting your satellite/cable box to the SCART marked 'decoder' and the TV to the other SCART socket and then selecting E1 or E2 channels on the VCR to switch between the two.
    Not that the instructions make this very clear though, you also need to set the video output of your decoder to 'video' or 'composite'or no picture will be visible.
    Overall then a good value VCR with fairly good sound and picture quality thanks to its 6 heads(4 video and 2 audio), but a decent instruction manual is needed.

    I was very disappointed with this machine as it had come highly recommended and I've had good experience with Phillips machines in the past. However, I've only had it about 5 months and now it won't record programmes from Sky, it won't allow me to record programmes from Channel 5 and from the beginning I was unable to play videos that I had recorded on a different machine, despite the fact that my previous machine was also a 6 head Nicam machine. I'm now having to replace it!

    I have just purchased this VCR as I have a nice collection of Video's that I wish to keep and watch. I am very happy with the picture and sound quality of this Philips VCR.

    It took me a time to set up but got there in the end. When setting up you have to tune in a channel between 22-38, and another channel (0-9)on the TV to programme Philips VCR to view.

    The 'Follow On' option works in conjuction with Freeview Digital or Sat/Cable Box. You can set & save programme on the Dig/Sat/Cable Box. Set the Philips VCR 'Follow On' to 'ON' and the Dig/Sat/Cable Box will send a SIGNAL to the VCR to RECORD. It's great.
