I was so looking forward to getting this phone and resisted the temptation to buy an alternative as I particularly wanted the SMS capability. But once it finally arrived I was somewhat disappointed. The build quality is poor with the handsets feeling very plasticy and flimsy; The size of the text on the display is too small and difficult to read; the ring tones are very cheesy; and finally, SMS is difficult to use  if anyone wants to send you a text they have to send it to a 077 number and end their message with #your_number#, not very user friendly. On the plus side, battery life and answer machine playback volume is much better than the Alcatel that Im replacing, but thats probably true of any new telephone. My advice is look at other alternatives and leave SMS to your mobile.

We bought this phone to replace our ageing Onis telephones - bought about 4 years ago.
The new system has a proper dot-matrix LCD display, a central phone book (the same numbers are available on all the phones) and a "graphical" menu - little icons.
The phone book is the single biggest enhancement. Some things are harder to use from the handsets than with the old Onis - in particular playing back messages from the answer phone.
The new handsets are smaller, lighter and nice to hold, without being as small as a mobile.
It was a good upgrade, and we bought 3 handsets with a base station for the price that a single handset and base cost 4 years ago.

I wanted a SMS-capable, 2-handset DECT phone with a shared 100+ number phone book and answerphone, and only found two models with all these features - a Panasonic and this Philips. I asked for either as a Christmas present last year and was bought the Philips Onis 300 Vox.

Positives: shared phone book (no need to enter numbers twice or worry about which handset you are using), sms, fairly solid build quality, reliable, good range, battery life and sound quality, great answerphone, caller id, hands free.

Negatives - chief niggle is the lack of a backlit display - in a dimly-lit room it is impossible to read the small display. The slow communication between the base and handset means a second or two delay when using the phone book. The jog wheel is not as user friendly or ergonomic as it should be. It is difficult to hold the phone between your ear and shoulder... but then again, it can be used hands free.

Overall I'm still happy with the product, but sometimes wish I'd been bought the Panasonic with backlit display and joystick...
