Book Description

3 Oct 2011
Philip's Stargazing 2012 is a concise guide to the northern night sky, helping starwatchers to see the year's most fascinating events, whether observing with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. The guide is suitable for use between latitudes 40 N and 60 N, including Britain and Ireland, Europe as far south as Rome, and Canada and the northern USA as far south as Philadelphia. Each chapter (one for each month of the year) has a colour star map, created by Wil Tirion, showing the positions and phases of the Moon, the positions of the planets, and other useful information. Each month also includes a constellation described in detail; special events during the month, such as eclipses; a featured astronomical object, usually a deep-sky target; plus an astrophotograph, with details of how it was taken. The Solar System Almanac explains the movement of the planets, with particular attention paid to their positions in 2012. Solar and lunar eclipses, meteor showers and comets are also described. Exploring the Deep Sky provides a list of recommended deep-sky objects. The observer can use the monthly charts to discover which constellations are on view, and then use this information to plan deep-sky observing. The book concludes with an Equipment Review. Here Robin Scagell, author of Philip's Stargazing with a Telescope, provides a round-up of what's new in observing technology, from the latest brands of telescope to the best webcams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy star-gazing 29 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Useful book laid out in an easy-to-read format for novices such as me. Each month has a "map" of the sky showing which constellations, planets and moons are visible with or without a telescope at various dates and times of the night. Plenty of text provides further details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philips Stargazing 2012 28 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
Anyone who has been following the BBC's Stargazing Live series recently might be interested in this booklet of star charts for the coming year. Authors Nigel Henbest and Heather Cooper's notes that accompany each month's star chart are very clear and easy to understand. I would recommend this book to both beginners without any equipment and to those who have either binoculars or a small telescope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up with the stars! 27 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
As usual, Philip's yearly Stargazing book is full of fantastic info and helped a lot when watching Stargazing live. I was able to understand what Prof Brian Cox was talking about. This is the third year that I've bought the book and will buy one again next year. Brilliant!
