Product Description

Product Description

Philips Consumer Lighting
Philips is a household name in lighting and a true innovator in products that enhance lifestyle. The Philips retrofit LED and energy saving lamps, halogen lamps and of course, the traditional incandescent bulbs are instantly recognizable as premium brands. Now that lighting plays a greater role in setting the scene and mood creation in the home, Philips have introduced the Home Lighting Accessories (HLA) range.

Fun is a common factor in all of the Philips Home Lighting Accessories. They are perfect gifts for birthdays, Christmas, Mother’s day, Valentine’s day or just for the fun of giving! The effects that they create are entertaining, amusing, exciting and perfect for setting the scene at parties, evenings with friend or romantic nights at home.

SpotOn Ultra

Instant light anywhere and everywhere
The improved SpotOn Ultra (as oppose to its predecessor SpotOn) is a compact wireless lamp with a high brightness LED and efficient reflector for effective light distribution. Using the accessories that are included, SpotOn Ultra is perfect for dark hallways, under beds or in cupboards. Furthermore it doesn’t need mains connection or a light point due to the fact that it is battery operated (3 x AAA Alkaline batteries included). Thanks to the daylight sensor and infrared motion detector, SpotOn Ultra turns itself on when someone is close, but only when it’s dark. This saves battery power as well as eliminating the need to fumble around for a light switch. Available in six great colours, the SpotOn Ultra is a great gift idea and impulse buy, because every home has places that need a SpotOn Ultra.

(Note: The light turns off when there is no movement in front of it. The product will not switch off automatically, if the product is placed in a position where something continues to activate it)

Box Contains

  • 1 x SpotOn Ultra
  • 3 x AAA (Alkaline LR03) Batteries
  • Mounting accessories (screws, double sided tape and magnets)

    In case it helps anyone, the dimensions (not given in the product details or by other reviewers) are approximately 8 x 7 x 1 cms - a little less, if anything.

    That makes it smaller than Mr Beams (12 x 10 x 4) which uses 4 AA batteries (not supplied). Spoton uses 3 x AAA and a set is included. Based on other people's reviews, it seems that Mr Beams creates less glare and reliably stays off in daylight, unlike the Spoton.

    The Osram Nightlux benefits from having LEDs that swivel up/down - great for lighting the floor, when wall-mounted - and it can be used outside. I can't find the dimensions, though, or battery requirements. It doesn't seem to have batteries included, and a reviewer says that (like the Spoton) it tends to come on during dull days.

    The Spoton is the cheapest is of the three and batteries are supplied. Mr Beams is mid-priced and can also be bought in a pack of three, making it a little more competitive with Spoton if you can make use of all three. Nightlux is the most expensive.

    I suggest Spoton for lighting cupboards, Mr Beams for lighting the way to the bathroom at night, Nightlux for use outdoors (but consider the Solar Welcome Door Light instead of Nightlux - I have a couple and they're pretty good, no batteries required).

    I have two of these devices for about a year now. I use them mainly to light my way during the night, placed at critical spots of my house. Below you can find the PROS and CONS of this device derived from my experience:

    PROS:
    1. The light is good, bright enough for a night walk around the house.
    2. The motion sensor doesn't work at 10 feet range, but it works decently at closer distances. It seems that the distance it can work is diminished as the battery is draining out.
    3. The batteries can hold about a week if you use it for a purpose similar to mine. I use AAA rechargable batteries with 1000mAh capacity. Please, for god's sake, DON'T use the batteries shipped with it! Respect yourself and the environment!
    4. The adhesive tape at the back of the unit is extraordinary. It can hold it pretty well if you mount it on the wall. No problem after about 1 year of usage.
    5. The magnets is a brilliant idea. You can remove the batteries to recharge them easily without unmounting the unit from the wall. They are also handy during the day that the unit is keep lightning due to the crapy daylight sensor. Just remove the front part and leave it on a surface with the motion sensor pointing to the ground. The led won't turn on again and you will save your battery.

    CONS:
    1. As I said above the motion sensor is decent, but not great. Sometimes it seems that it doesn't work ok, detecting your movement too late, or it may not work at all at greater distances. I think that there is space for improvement here!
    2. The daylight sensor is absolutely useless! I'm leaving in Greece, there is plenty of sun out there, but the sensor doesn't work inside the house. It is not sensitive at all. It will work only outside at the balcony.

    Having purchased the original 'SpotOn' light a couple of years ago I needed another and decided to go for this new 'Ultra SpotOn' model. It may be more expensive but the light is much better than the old model - much whiter and a much better spread of light. So pleased with it i have ordered another to replace the old model.

    The new single LED Spoton Ultra offers improved light over the previous 3 LED version. A good really bright choice for any dark cupboard or small shed where it can be installed facing downwards to avoid dazzle. One feature I don't like, which hasn't been improved, and compares unfavourably with the (usually more expensive) OSRAM Nightlux is the mounting arrangement. The Spoton Ultra base requires to be screwed (or stuck) to a surface and the lamp attaches to the base magnetically. It cannot therefore be easily used in more than place at a time. In contrast the OSRAM Nightlux will attach to any magnetic washer and can potentially be moved to as many places as you have magnetic washers for. I also like the way the OSRAM Nightlux LEDs swivel making it possible to mount on a vertical surface without dazzle.

    I recently built a cupboard unbder the stairs to keep the vacumm abd grandchbildren's toys in. The cupboard needed a light but I didn't want to go the time and expense of installing a power supply from the garage next door. After a lot of internet searching I discovered the Philips Spoton Ultra. It was cheap and is perfect for the job. Delivery was also very prompt

    Pros:
    - Relatively cheap

    Cons:
    - Kind of bulky aspect;
    - Poor light sensibility (just doesn't turns on under direct relatively strong light);
    - Poor movement sensibility (I guess the range it is something like 25º to each side)
    - Different color temperature between units (I have two, bought at the same time, one has a white light and the other one has a yellowish light)

    If you want this to use as a night light (in a bathroom, for example), I can recommend Mr Beams wireless PIR motion sensor battery powered LED night light if you can afford it, which is much better.
