Sonicare AirFloss--An Easier Way to Clean Between Teeth

The AirFloss removes up to 99% more plaque than brushing alone
Sonicare AirFloss removes up to 99% more plaque than brushing alone

Philips Sonicare AirFloss is an effective, easy and gentle way to clean in between your teeth. The innovative AirFloss uses Philips' breakthrough Microburst technology to remove plaque from in between teeth with a quick burst of air and micro-water droplets for a fresh, clean feeling. Studies have shown that when used with a manual toothbrush, Sonicare AirFloss removes up to 99% more plaque between teeth than brushing alone.* AirFloss is also pleasant to use. After one month, 96% of inconsistent flossers continued to use Sonicare AirFloss four or more days per week.

The AirFloss has an ergonomically designed handle and angled nozzle to access all areas of the mouth, a simple 'point and press' button to release a quick, targeted burst of water, and a cordless, rechargeable handle that fits on the same charger as the Sonicare FlexCare. The AirFloss cleans between all teeth in less than 60 seconds. It has a nozzle guidance tip to ensure targeted cleaning between teeth and produces less than a teaspoon of water per whole mouth clean. The AirFloss can also be used with mouthwash to enhance the overall experience of freshness and oral health benefits. Just check that your mouthwash does not contain Isopropyl Myristate, as this could damage the device. Click here to take a closer look at the AirFloss's features.

Safe and Gentle

Sonicare AirFloss is gentle on teeth and gums and is safe to use with dental restorative materials. In fact, 78% of people tested by Philips reported that Sonicare AirFloss was gentler on teeth and gums than regular manual dental floss.

Why Floss?

Brushing and flossing are a strong combination against gum disease. By making them both a regular part of your daily oral care routine, you help prevent tooth decay and gum disease that, if left untreated, ultimately damage gum tissue and the bones that support the teeth. Brushing twice a day and flossing once a day help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. They work together as an unbeatable team—-neither one works as well without the other.

If you brush your teeth but don’t floss, a significant portion of your teeth are left unclean. In fact, you’ll only be getting 60% of your teeth clean, because 40% of your tooth surfaces are in between your teeth, where bits of food can easily get caught. Flossing helps you reach in between the back teeth, which are difficult to brush. By not flossing, you’re not reaching the bacteria that will build up and cause plaque, bad breath and infection. By keeping your mouth healthy you’ll also keep your breath fresher.

Instructions for Use

Charging Your AirFloss

In order to get the most out of your AirFloss’ battery life, it is essential that you charge it for 24 hours before first use. When it’s fully charged, the charge indicator will flash green. A full charge will last for two weeks.

You may need to press the activation button approximately six times until spray is produced
You may need to press the activation button six times until spray is produced.
Preparing for Use

After the initial 24 hour charge, attach the nozzle to the handle and fill the reservoir with water or mouthwash. Check that your mouthwash does not contain Isopropyl Myristate, as this can damage the AirFloss. Use the power button to switch the device on, and then press the activation button about six times, or until spray is produced.

Using Your AirFloss

Place the tip of the AirFloss between your teeth and apply gentle pressure. Press the activation button for a burst of air and water, then glide the tip along your gum line until you feel it settle between two teeth. Press the activation button again and repeat between all your teeth.

To clean your AirFloss, remove the nozzle and rinse it with water only. You can also use a cotton bud to wipe the reservoir if you wish.

Storing Your AirFloss

After each use, empty the reservoir of water and press the activation button until no spray is produced. If you will not be using your AirFloss for a few days, unplug it and clean it and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

4.0 out of 5 stars It works well 22 Jun 2012
    Verified Purchase
I've had recurring gingivitis and on my last visit to the dentist was told in no uncertain terms that if I didn't start taking proper care of my teeth I'd start losing them as my gums had begun recessing and bleeding daily. I find flossing messy and very time consuming so decided to try a different approach after hearing about water flossing.

I chose the Philips product for 3 reasons, firstly on the strength of positive reviews on Amazon, secondly because it's battery operated and thirdly because I trust the Philips brand and know they make good products, particularly in terms of battery life.

    Initial Impressions

For 67 I was a little underwhelmed at seeing the thing out of the box. It looks quite basic and there's no accessories with it. The user guide is extremely basic and not very helpful either.

Unlike other air and water floss devices, the Philips model has no adjustable pressure. There's no different nozzles with it either. This is very much a "one size fits all" product. It just has two buttons, on/off and spray. In terms of ergonomics it's quite a bulky device to hold but not that heavy despite the hefty battery in it. The nozzle is quite small and easy to get in-between teeth and along the gum line. The device charges on one of those no contact charges which uses the clever electromagnetic power transfer technology. That makes it safer to use in bathrooms or near sinks. Annoyingly the charger came with a European 2-pin plug, requiring an adaptor which Philips did not provide. I simply cut the 2-pin plug off and put a UK 3-pin mains plug on it rather than spend more money on an adaptor. Philips claim the battery will last about 2 weeks between charges which is rather good compared to other products I saw reviewed which typically last 2 days.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too expensive and flawed design 30 Jun 2012
    Verified Purchase
I have been using this for about 8 months now so it seems as if I have been lucky given the number of comments about failures after a few weeks. Basically it does work and it is quick - the 2 claims made for it. However there are stupid design failures which, as a former engineer, infuriate me.

    - The shape is such that it only just balances on its base. If it falls off the wash basin it is likely to break the plastic nozzle. If you put it on its side it wobbles about like an egg. The charging base is likewise far too small and so it is unstable when charging.

    - the water reservoir is unnecessarily small and the cap on it can form an airtight seal. The result is that the pressure within it falls as you use it and, before the water is half used, it stops delivering any water to the nozzle.

Given the price has increased from 54 last November to 72 now, I don't think I would buy another one now.

By D. Parkin TOP 1000 REVIEWER
    Verified Purchase
Bought this to give it a whirl having seen ads for it at my dentists, and noting that it came with a money back guarantee if I was not satisfied with it. I compared it with other dental irrigation/flossing machines on the site and around the web, before parting with my dosh. I thought that it was worth a try, given that I found regular flossing a chore and somewhat fiddly - my teeth are quite tightly abutted in places.
I charged the water flosser up - as advertised, this was relatively quick, with it fully charged after 4 hours - and I filled the water reservoir and prepared to give it a try, not without a degree of healthy scepticism. I was also a tad wary, having read of other reviewers who had experienced gum discomfort.
After a few priming squirts, I positioned in my mouth as directed and - splat - my tooth and gum had been blasted, and the bathroom mirror had been splattered by the returning spray that had not been forced through the teeth. After wiping the mirror I moved on to the next tooth, this time keeping my lips closed over the back of the device, and hey-presto! The problem of the returning water spray was no longer an issue. I moved around my gnashers and gum line, spraying and feeling the pressure pushing through my teeth and hitting my tongue. This was not unpleasant, just a tad weird. Spitting out the residue after a few teeth had been 'flossed', I was pleased to see evidence of dislodged nasties from between my teeth in the basin. On closer inspection, I noted that my gumline and gaps between the teeth were cleaned to a standard that beat the pants off my previous attempts to manually floss.
I chewed a disclosing tablet to give my teeth an even more focussed clean, and my mouth was soon a fetching shade of blue.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great for a week or two 23 Mar 2012

I must confess my mouth felt brilliant after using it. I just prefer my electrical appliances not to break down in the first month. Seems this is common with this item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great if you hate flossing 11 Nov 2011
    By M. Hira
Having had this now for 4 weeks, I would like to add my 2p :)

    1) It is REALLY easy to use.
    2) I am finally 'flossing' everyday since this makes it so much easier and better than the regular floss. This gives me the giddy feeling that I am finally making my dentist happy.
    3) Battery lasts really long - so you don't need to have it on the charger continuously like a toothbrush. They say two weeks. I am have still not charged it 4 weeks later!

    Minor negatives:
    1) Water tank is too small. They say it is good for two uses - more like 1 use for a reason I will explain below. However it is very easy to fill up so I am not too bothered by this. I however would not use mouthwash in here. I do think it will mess up the internals
    2) Tightly packed teeth can pose a challenge. I find that in this case, I 'floss/shoot' that gap twice or thrice. In fact I love it so much, I sometimes do each gap twice :)

Other reviews make note of the 'kickback' action and users being scared of the 'flossing/air' action. It's not bad. In fact it seems perfectly normal to me. It is quite powerful but you DO want it to clean!

I would recommend this for most people. Just make sure your mouth is closed when you press the button, or else you will need to clean the bathroom mirror :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Much easier than normal flossing and appears to be effective
I have my doubts about the long term reliability, it tends to make nasty grinding noises from time to time, but otherwise works well and has a good guarantee.
