The hardest part about setting this storage device up was getting it out of the (tight fitting) polythene bag. Other than that, my four-year-old Dell recognised and installed the device in seconds and was transferring data at a rate of 1GB/minute immediately. Initial impressions are that it does exactly what it says it does and does it quickly and quietly. I'd recommend it to any Microsoft user thinking of buying such a size of disk drive.

The only slight surprise to me was size - from the picture on Amazon, I was expecting something a little bigger and this is very compact.

One possible caution for Mac users is that the storage format is NTFS. This is ideal for Microsoft but Mac users are told to reformat to FAT32. The very brief paper instructions don't say how to do this and whilst the information is doubtless somewhere on one of the two Philips URLs given for further information, it wasn't clearly visible on a short visit.

Having read the customer reviews of other storage devices on Amazon yesterday, I very nearly chose one of the smaller storage volume devices that get a full five stars. Somehow my awe at owning a 1TB storage device coupled with the attractive price and the fact that Philips has quite a reputation to lose convinced me to go for it.

Those same reviews of other devices also talk of premature failure of some devices so I'll be glad when the next month is past and will be careful to duplicate storage elewhere of anything import.

To summarise therefore, initial impressions are great and it seems good value for money. Let's see how the reliability stats work out.

This drive is brushed aluminium with plastic at either end surrounded by rubber that helps it stay stationary when on a flat surface.

The drive comes pre-formatted with NTFS. Something that is welcome by a windows user that regularly transfers single files larger than 1gb.

In all, the reliaibility cannot be commented on this early on, but the drive does operate quite speedily and file transfers are maybe 5-10 seconds faster than my other external hard drive. Perhaps this is to do with what Philips calls the "prolific chip" for accelerated file transfers. The drive remains quiet throughout operation.

Onto the issues I've found. One, is that the drive takes maybe 15-20 seconds to initialise. My other external hard drive is usable after 5 seconds or so. This may be down to low spin speeds to extend the life of the drive and reduce power consumption, but other than that, the drive sleeps when the computer is put to sleep and wakes when the computer wakes.

Secondly, it gets wildly hot. This may because of the smaller form factor, or a thinner layer of aluminium. Think of when you played who could keep their hand on the radiator for longer...it gets that hot occasionally...

At the moment, for �95 it's certainly good value for money. If the reliability holds up, this is certainly a drive I recommend.

A few problems with this hard drive. I originally bought the unit in September and it ran well until the beginning of December when my computer began to register read write faults. By chance I put my hand on the drive and found it was too hot to handle. Amazon supplied to me a replacement for which I was grateful however the replacement was even hotter than the original and I have asked for a refund rather than wait for the failure. As I have two 1TB drives I was able to compare and contrast with the western digital unit which by comparison runs barely warm. Just in case the thought goes through your head, I do not work for WD and this is the first review I have written although I have purchase many items from Amazon
