5.0 out of 5 stars Rich sound, fantastic comfort 16 Mar 2011
Whilst trying to decide on a pair of good quality headphones - wanting a pair with good enough sound to wear indoors, but not too large to wear out - I tried on loads. Many sounded fantastic, others sounded weak, some looked great, some looked stupid.

The one thing that was almost universal with these medium size headphones was the comfort. They all felt ok, but it was easy to tell that they would grow tiresome quickly. When I tried on the Philips SHP5401 it was a revelation. They are so comfortable, with plenty of soft cushioning, thankfully lacking the usual leather cover that can leave your ears sweating. They can squeak a little when moving about, and wearing them with glasses on is less comfortable, but overall the comfort is perfect.

The sound quality is rich and full, strong both on the treble and bass. Volume is good, though I'm a fan of ear splittingly loud music, which is something they don't do. These are headphones for people who love a deep balanced sound.

For the price they are perfect. Highly recommended.

Really pleased with my purchase. Not only do they look good and are extremely comfortable but the sound quality is impressive for headphones. Of course it is a personal choice but I would recommend them to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philips SHP5401/00 Stereo Headphones 20 July 2011
I have marked this product based on my expectations v what it delivers.
The fact that I have given it 5 stars shows it met and even surpassed my hopes and expectations.
For headphones that just fall over the 20 mark (very cheap for headphones of any quality), the sound quality is very good and these give great value for money.

It must be said that I am not a person who would tend to play my music at full volume, and for those who are, these probably aren't for you because that would definately lead to others around being able to hear the sound.
But as I play my music at a reasonable setting (although by no means quiet) to appreciate the quality rather than the volume, no one can hear any sound escaping from these headphones.

The strange thing is though, I can still hear some sounds from outside. Again, if you like to hear nothing but your music playing, these may not be for you, but I personally like to know that I have some link still with the outside world, so the fact that I can still hear others nearby but they can not hear my music is a bonus to me.

Having just a single wire feed into one side only is better than having twin wires into each side.

These headphones look great. They are also very light in weight so are comfortable to wear. There is a good up/down range of adjustment to the ear pieces on both sides. The earpeice covering is very soft and has no contour, so the ear piece sits against you ear rather than over it, so you don't get the usual "sweatiness" that you find with full cover headphones, and can wear them for long periods without any problems.

I have purchased a number of Philips products over the years, and as is usually the case with their products, these are proving to be a good buy. I would highly recommend these phones to anyone looking for a decent set of headphones delivering the goods at a very reasonable price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Sound Quality but... 6 May 2012

I bought these headphones on Amazon after reading the fantastic reviews about them. they were cheap, looked good, and were apparently quite sturdy.

When I received them, I tried them in my house and was AMAZED at the sound quality. For 30 odd pounds, the sound is very clear, with nice bass (but not too much) and a good balance of frequencies.

However, when I tried them out and about, in the street, on the bus etc... I find that they just simply do NOT block out any sound! I can have my iPod on full volume, and still probably hear what someone is saying 5 metres away. This is really annoying for people who want to just get lost in their music, without having to listen to some annoying crying kid on the bus. This also means that the sound leak is pretty bad, although the volume on these is pretty low anyway - not for people who like their music LOUD. Another problem is that they're a bit tight for people with larger heads. They ARE generally comfy, but just bear that in mind.

If you are using these at home or somewhere quiet, I would definitely recommend them: great sound quality, comfy, strong, perfect length for the lead (and the lead only comes out of one side - big bonus)& they look great. Just not for Commuters!

5.0 out of 5 stars For the price, unbeatable 12 Nov 2011
By frogs
I usually use a pair of Sennheiser HD595 for headphone duties, but my son plays PS3 sometimes in the living room, or I listen to a bit of music later on, on my laptop. I had a pair of Sennheiser HD485 for backup, but they got destroyed. I wanted a cheap, no-frills replacement, and after much searching on the internet for reviews I was at a loss...so I simply bought the best (yes!) in the supermarket, ignored reviews and took a gamble. And wow. For the money these are supremely comfortable, and more importantly, extremely balanced sonically. No overblown bass which seems to be the norm these days (but no missing bass either). Extremely flat response to my ears. Smooth and listenable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect 9 Jun 2011
By Mimi
They look beautiful, they're superbly comfortable, there's next to no sound leakage, sharp and clean sound definition, good deliverance, rich bass, cable is long but not too long, they're very practical for using with an mp3 or at home. Far better than any Sony's I tried. When my friend stood on them a few months ago I was distraught and determined to find a new pair. So glad I did!
