Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Philips Logo Advanced acoustics with crisp, detailed, transparent sound
Philips SHE9850 headphones deliver the ultimate in pure sound. Backed by a Balanced Armature transducer, expert tuning and an Angled Acoustic design, they yield remarkably crisp, detailed and transparent audio with extended precision highs.

High definition transducer
The motor of the receiver comprises a coil, a metal u-shaped armature and a pair of permanent magnets, as well as a drive rod and a diaphragm. Electromagnetic currents alter the armature's polarity up or down, moving the drive rod and diaphragm to generate sound output. The receiver components have been fine-tuned to produce greater output at lower frequencies while boosting the peaks at higher frequencies. The result is crisp, detailed and transparent audio with extended precision highs.
Precise acoustic tuning
Designed for a high-quality listening experience, these headphones have been meticulously tuned by Philips iLab to deliver professional-grade acoustics with extended precision highs. The resulting sound is transparent, crisp and detailed.
Philips Headphones
Precise acoustic tuning
Designed for a high-quality listening experience, these headphones have been meticulously tuned by Philips iLab to deliver professional-grade acoustics with extended precision highs. The resulting sound is transparent, crisp and detailed.
Angled acoustic design
Derived from a thorough understanding of the anatomy of a human ear canal, the Angled Acoustic design adjusts the angle of the speaker tube and ear bud to individual ear canal shapes. Besides delivering sound directly to your ears, it also creates a perfect seal from ambient noise that enables you to listen to your music at lower volume levels.
Philips Headphones
Ear fitting design
The design superiority of a slight 15-degree tilt in the Angled Acoustic model based on the anatomy of the human ear achieves a natural fit and supreme comfort.
3-size ultra-soft silicon cap
Available in three different sizes (small, medium and large), the interchangeable ear caps ensure a personalised fit for each individual user. They are also made from ultra-soft silicon to provide the utmost comfort for prolonged listening.
Philips Headphones
Tight-sealing foam sleeves
Made from slow recovery foam, this pair of sleeves is a comfortable alternative to the rubber ear caps. A snug seal is created by these foam sleeves when they are compressed between the fingers before being inserted into the user's ear canal. After the earphone is held in place for a few seconds, the slow-recovery foam expands to create a secure and tight fit.
Premium metal housing
Housed in superior metal, these earphones are shielded from unnecessary vibration for accurate sound transmission, resulting in smooth bass response and clear mid-to-high-range tones.
Philips Headphones
Sleek metal carrying case
Made of high-quality metal with a luxurious touch, the compact carrying case incorporates a cable bank, which provides an easy solution for neat cable winding and headphone storage. It even includes a storage compartment for the foam sleeves. The hard case exterior also provides additional protection for the headphones when they are not in use.
Symmetrical cables
These headphones have symmetrical cables to prevent them from tangling, and hence make for easy listening.
Flexi-grip design
The soft flexi-grip material that the body of the headphone is sheathed in enhances its performance and extends its durability. It protects the cable connection from damage that otherwise could occur due to repeated bending of the headphone body from frequent contact with the user's fingertips when being put on and removed.

I bought these after reading how comfortable they were. I have always had a problem with in-ear phones before. Not only are they the best fit I have ever found but the quality of the music is excellent. Also I find I can run my ipod touch at volume 6 rather than 9 when walking down the road as the gain from the phones is excellent. Although the case is a good idea I prefer to use a pouch to keep them in as winding the cord up each time is fiddly.

    Pros:
Amazing sound quality - Better than Senheiser CX300, Better than Bose in-ear head phones and even Bose on-ear ones too. Well done Philips!

Great construction - quality materials used. annodized aluminium and solid rubber cables. I've had mine for 14 months now and they still look brand new!

Cons: Not good for listening to while running/walking around.
You really only get the volume in the bass freqencies when you have the headphones well fitted and forming a seal around your ear canal... This results in the vibrations from the cable being heard by your ears and are quite often louder than the music! This is especially bad when running as the cable thumps against your body. You can notice this problem with any pair of in-ear headphones, but I've never had as bad as with the SHE9850.

    Conclusion:
Worth every penny! But I had to get another pair for running.

Having read loads of reviews about headphone, including those supplied with iPods I thought I would order a decent pair of headphones at the same time as my iPod touch. This in my first set of in-ear headphones and having tried the iPod original set and the Philips I was quite disappointed and felt that I had wasted my money.(I thought the originals were OK). However, I did persevere with the Philips and have been well rewarded with very crisp and clear sound. The definition is superb. The sound is much better than the original set supplied.
I find them very comfortable and easy to use.
The cable is a decent length and does not have any extension cables. (Something that put me off other pairs).
My only reservation is a lack of bass, but in truth, I sooner go for clarity over bass, hence the five stars.
A word of caution: If you can wait, watch the price for a while it can vary quite a bit.

These are balanced armature headphones, This means that they use a similar technology to hearing aids.
These are the 2nd set of balanced armature headphones I've owned and to be fair you have to listen to a pair yourself, As I can't do them justice in writing. These are no better or worse than other balanced armature headphones but they are at aprice that is tempting to some. If these are still too much check out the Sony (think its an EP1)
I would recommend these to anyone who listen to a wide selection of music however these have not got a lot of Bass. They can produce great top and bottom end but are not geared towards your BEATS generation, these have not been altered to create more bass, they only produce what was already there, and therefore you don't loose the rest of the music.

These iem's are really well built and have a beautiful finish! They are dead easy to fit and get a good seal thanks to the excellent angled design. I really wanted to like and keep these but couldn't due to their over-bright sound signature.

The sound of these iem's can best be described as bright and rather analytical. To me they are just too bright. There is clearly a peak at around 1.5-3kHz which can be seen on Philip's own Frequency response graph for these. This makes them tiresome to listen especially with bright material. The midrange is better and have good resolution. The bass is deep and very firm and dry - good.

So in sum, these might fit you if you're looking for a pair of high quality analytical iem's and don't mind the peak in the lower treble. You certainly won't be disapointed in the build quality or finish witch is really as good as it gets. I can not however rate these higher than 3 stars due to their sound signature even though the build in itself merits a 5 star rating.

I ended up returning these and bought the excellent Sound Magic PL-30's instead which I found superior and are fantastic earphones for much less money than these.

First pair of in-ear phones I've used. They took a bit of getting used to, but if you can ignore the noise caused by the cables rubbing against clothing, the sound quality is great. The sound level is also much higher at lower volume settings than my previous phones and the background noise levels are much lower as well.

well philips have made a nice little IEM here, its very shure like but its far warmer sounding but not too much so. rather mid centric and isolates quite well makes this a really quite nice sound to listen to. it isnt the most fun thig ever and its not going to thump out bass like cheap senns or sonys do but for something warm and pleasant with very nice mids this is a bit of a bargin compared to what shure has to offer
