This gadget has revolutionised my approach to baby food and has given me the confidence to make all my baby's food myself since he started solids. It has already paid for itself but more importantly, i know exactly what he is eating and know it contains nothing but the fresh ingredients i add. It is so simple, takes up such little counter space, no mess. You literally add whatever combination you want to try (yesterday baby had beetroot, cabbage and beef) into the jug, add water, steam for 20 mins and then blend. It is easy to wash. My only issue is that scale builds up quite quickly inside, and I usually get rid of it by adding citric acid crystals to the water tank over night and then run the steamer through twice. I have been using it heavily since June and its going strong. I don't think i would have been able to do this (make my own baby food) if it wasn't this easy (with 2 kids and very little time and less energy). Just think - if a baby food jar costs approx. 70p and your baby eats even only 3 per day that makes about fourteen pounds a week - pays for itself in 5 weeks and can be used even after baby stops eating mushy food. I highly highly recommend.

For those wanting to make their own baby food, this may seem like the perfect option. By combining a blender with a steamer, it helps to retain the food's nutritional content, therefore helping to keep your babies healthy. However, the blending and steaming have to be done in separate operations.

In order to steam the food, the jar has to be placed upside down on the machine. There's no need to worry about the lid falling off while doing so as it's a very tight fit - almost too tight as it does need to be forced slightly to get it into place. There's also several safety functions built in to ensure that you can't steam without the jar properly in place, thereby reducing the risk of burns.

After the steaming process is finished, all you need to do is to turn the jar the right way up again, and select the blend function (You need to hold it in this position, otherwise it will turn off).

With regards to cleaning, all of the removable parts are dishwasher safe however the manual states that a de-scaling process is necessary every four weeks in order to ensure 100% efficiency. In order to do this, you need citric acid, however Philips only include a single sachet. The de-scaling process also requires that it is left overnight with the solution in the tank before running a steaming cycle with the jar empty.

On the whole, it seems like the actual process of preparing food is very hassle free, however the regular de-scaling that is required somewhat spoils the attraction for me - although not enough to put me off using it!

This is brilliant. It makes preparing baby food so easy. The only thing that is annoying is that things like sweet potato stain the lid, no matter how hard you scrub.

I bought it for when I did started weaning my LO. I found that he didn't like steamed food so much, and it was better to cook his food in the saucepan with a little bit of olive oil plus some garlic or onions and later blend it. So I didn't use the steamer so much. Anyway, the blender is great as it's baby proof because if it's not properly closed it will not operate.

Excellent product, really easy to use, chop food up, put water in steamer compartment, using the jug which has the timings on, the machine can tell how much you've put in & turns off after the designated time, you then just flip it over & blend the food, much much easier than steaming or boiling & then getting a handheld blender or food processor out. Very easy to clean as well.

The only reason I've marked it down a star is because it doesn't fit much in, in one go. I used the recipe book for my 1st attempt (2 carrots & 1 sweet potato) but even that small an amount had to be done in 2 batches. Also I think the instructions could be a bit clearer, took me ages to figure out how to open it & how to dismantle the steamer end to clean as it was so stiff, but that's a little niggle once you know, you know & it couldn't be easier.

I bought this when it was on offer at a cheaper price. However, if it ever stopped working, I'd have no hesitation in buying a new one at full price. It is so easy to use. You just put all your ingredients in the jar with the blade already in place. Put the lid on and pour water in the tank, that is hidden in the base, using the little measuring cup provided. You have to put the jug on the unit upside-down...then the machine knows what you're about to do. That's all you need to do to get things started. The steamer selection on the unit's dial clicks into place and stays there for the duration of the steaming process.

All your food is steamed to perfection. I used to use other methods of steaming and found some of the veg would come out burned on the edges. This doesn't do that.

When the steaming cycle is over, it beeps quite faintly to let you now it's ready for the next stage. It doesn't just beep once, it keeps on beeping at intervals, so you don't forget. The next step is to take the jug off the unit, turn it up the right way and place it back on the unit. The machine will only operate in blending mode when the jug is in this position. You don't have to wait for any length of time before turning the jug round for blending. The blending selection on the dial has to be held in place...ie. you have to apply pressure in the direction of the selection and keep holding until you're happy with the outcome. It doesn't click and stay.

As your child gets older, you can take the lid off and pour away some of the liquid...but, for very young babies, you would need it quite runny. Don't forget, if it's too runny, you can always add a spoonful or two of baby rice to thicken it.
