Product Description

Philips AVENT Variable Flow Teats

The Philips AVENT Variable Flow Teat has a slot cut that provides an extra-fast flow and also accommodates thicker liquids. The flow rate can be varied by turning the bottle to align the I, II or III markings on the teat with the baby's nose. The Variable Flow Teat is suitable for babies aged 3 months and upwards.

No 1 recommended

Philips AVENT teats make it easier to feed your baby, whether entirely by bottle or a combination of breast and bottle. The naturally shaped silicone teat allows your baby to control milk flow as it would when breastfeeding. This allows your baby to suckle almost as at the breast. As your baby feeds, the unique skirt on the AVENT teat flexes to allow air into the bottle, rather than baby’s tummy, preventing colic. The gentle whistling sound and watch the air bubbles burst on the surface of the milk. That's your guarantee that the air is being released into the bottle--not into your baby's tummy.

The naturally shaped teat allows baby to control milk flow as when breastfeeding, making it easy to combine breast and bottle.

Philips AVENT teats are designed to fit all bottles in the AVENT range. The AVENT teats are interchangeable, and available in different flow rates--newborn, slow, medium, fast and variable flow. Once baby moves up to the next teat stage, the old teat can simply be replaced with the new.

Remember that age indications are approximate, as babies develop at different rates. You will know when your baby is ready to move onto a faster flow rate because he or she will try to suck harder to get the milk more quickly. Baby may also show signs of tiredness or frustration during feeding.

Philips AVENT Feeding Bottles

The Philips AVENT Classic Feeding Bottle is designed to work with your baby's natural feeding rhythm. Philips AVENT bottles are clinically proven to reduce painful colic and discomfort after feeding.

Significantly reduces fussing

Unsettled and irritable behaviour, known as fussing, is by far the most commonly known crying behaviour in babies, but clinical studies show that the Philips AVENT Classic bottle significantly reduces fussing and colic. A randomised clinical trial was carried out to see whether infant feeding bottle design affects infant behaviour. The Philips AVENT bottle was shown to significantly reduce fussing by approximately 28 minutes a day as compared to the comparator bottle. This was especially true during night-time.

Fussing: A clinical study showed that at two weeks of age, babies showed less fussing than babies fed with another leading bottle.

Colic: A clinical study showed that at two weeks of age babies fed with a Philips AVENT bottle showed a trend to less colic than babies fed with a conventional bottle.

AVENT baby bottles come in a range of sizes.
Anti-colic system

Feeding bottles, whether they are angled or straight, need air inside the bottle to replace the milk your baby takes. When your baby drinks, a vacuum is formed in the bottle causing the teat to collapse, restricting milk flow. When unable to receive milk, a frustrated baby's natural reaction is to suck more vigorously, which in turn increases the amount of air swallowed. Most bottles need air to flow in through the hole in the tip of the teat to remove the vacuum, interrupting the flow and rhythm of sucking.

The two-piece anti-colic system on the Philips AVENT Feeding Bottle contains a ring that must be fitted between the teat and the bottle for extra performance.

Bottles are BPA-free and interchangeable with other AVENT products

Philips AVENT feeding bottles are 100% Bisphenol-A (BPA) free. Philips AVENT products have also been designed to be compatible with one another and are easily interchangeable, aiding the transition from newborn to toddler. Bottles and teats can be screwed on to or used with breast pumps, breast milk storage containers, magic cups, training cups and drinking spouts.

Superior quality

All Philips AVENT products are superior quality and designed with you and your baby's needs in mind. Through extensive research and clinical trials, Philips AVENT products work together effectively to promote baby's wellbeing and give you the flexibility to care for a growing baby.

Philips AVENT Tips for Bottle Feeding

  • Clean and sterilise all feeding parts before each use
  • Do not use abrasive cleaning agents or anti-bacterial cleaners with bottles and teats
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and ensure surfaces are clean before handling sterilized components
  • For inspection of the teat, pull it in each direction
  • Place the teat in boiling water for 5 minutes before first use to ensure hygiene
  • Throw away bottle and teats at the first sight of damage, weakness or scratching
  • Replace teats and spouts after 3 months use
  • Do not warm milk in a microwave as this may cause uneven heating and could scald your baby
  • Always check the milk temperature before feeding
  • Make sure that the bottles are not over-tightened
  • Do not allow your baby to play with small parts or run/walk while feeding

I have bought these especially when giving baby cereal with milk in his bottle, and for me it works perfect for this purpose. I don't think it is suitable for giving the baby only milk, as the opening is to big, it's especially for thicker liquids. For me it works perfect!

My baby was born 10 weeks premature and as a result of that suffers from terrible reflux and has to have thickener added to his milk called thick and easy. We struggeled to find a teat that he didn't have to work soo hard to get the milk (all holes too small) or one that didn't poor it down his neck (holes too big) the variflow is perfect for his ticker milk and he can now take it with ease without choking on it. This is what ut was designed for, to use with milk that has to be thickened rather than normal milk. Brilliant for that purpose!!!!

We have been using this type of teat for over a year now and just bought some extra for convienence.

The teat is marketed as 'variable flow' teat because the amount of flow depends on the position you put it into the mouth.
(The opening changes shape depending on from which side the teat is pressed together by the mouth)
But to be honest, we couldn't care less!
The reason we like this teats is because instead of several tiny holes (like the Avent 1,2,3 abd 4 teat) the 'variable flow' has a 'slot' that allows fluids that are somewhat thicker than just milk to be used without any problem.

A nice addition to the great Avent line-up.
But I would only recommend it from 6 months or so, not the suggested 3 months. (With 3 months our daughter was still using no 2 teat, with the #3 or #4 she would drink much too fast, I imagine that with the variable flow teat she would have been drowning in the big milk flow)

The I, II and III markings on the teat are not always easy to see, but that's just inherent to the product. The numbers on the 1, 2, 3, and 4 teats are also not easy to see. There's just no way to make very clear markings on a transparant silicone product that remain easy to see under all circumstances. Yes, it's inconvenient, but we can't really blame that on the product or manufacturer.
Theoretically you could practice year fingertips to feel the I, II, III because they are clearly raised. But for me that's really no satisfactory way to find out the position of the teat.

When they do find a solution for a more clear indication of the I, II, II position I'll give 5 stars, for now it's a 4 star rating.

(Don't mind my English, I'm just a simple Dutchman)
