I've never yet found the perfect shaver. That goes for blade shaving as much as electric shaving. Over the years I've used both Philips and Braun shavers, and have concluded that the three headed Philips ones are better for me. I would think it unrealistic for anyone to believe that the perfect shaver exists.
However, this shaver is the best I have yet found in 45 years of mostly electric shaving. It gives me the cleanest shave I have ever had with an electric shaver and it deals with three days of growth with no problems without the hair pulling you sometimes get with electric shavers. You have to work at it with this shaver, it needs a little time to get it right.
The misgivings I refer to are a couple of things that concern me over quality and spares.
The construction of the head seems very fragile to me. It's mounted by way of a very tiny plastic spline which connects the motor to the head. It seems to me that this makes the shaver very susceptible to damage if you should drop it on the head.
If the blades lose their edge, you have to buy a whole new head, not just a new blade set. £38 for a new head seems a bit heavy to me. I suppose it all depends on how quickly the blades lose their edge, and I will not know that for a while yet.
The trimmer is not as good as you normally find on a Philips shaver. It only sticks out about 1/4 of an inch from the body of shaver. This can make it difficult to trim in some area without the head getting in the way. I know you can always take the head off while trimming, but this is not how Philips usually do and most previous shavers I've used did not have this problem. The trimmer itself also seems very weak and would also be liable to damage with a slight knock.
Finally, you have to take the charging stand with you if you go away from home as there is no charging socket on the shaver. The charging stand does not fit into the travelling pouch that comes with the shaver, so you have to carry it separately. This seems like a step backwards, and is probably just a cost saving measure by Philips so that they don't need to include a charging unit inside the body of the shaver.
In conclusion, you probably wont get a much better electric shave than you will get from this shaver. If you have not been a regular electric shaver user, some may find it a little harsh on the skin at first. There is no sensitivity adjustment on this model like there has been on previous models. I knocked of one star due to the concerns above, but the shave you can get from it is excellent. If you can live with the price, then this is about as good as an electric shaver gets.

The shave is excellent or as good as any other Philishave I've had. But on this and some previous similar models, the design team at Philips seem pretty amateurish. It should be all too obvious that a good shaver must be designed to travel. This shaver is certainly not. Where is the charging socket on the bottom of the shaver that would allow an external charger to be plugged in? If it is too expensive to place the charging unit within, then at least a point that would allow an optional external charger to connect. The existing charger stand whilst very nice is for a bathroom shelf only. It is far to flimsy to travel with and will break in no time if you attempt it. I've taken mine back for a refund and got a solid cheaper model with a good old external charger and travel pouch! Come on Philips design team, this is not rocket science! You've maintained this silly flaw for at least two years. Wake up!

My favourite electric shavers have always been Philishaves which I used for many reliable years so I had high hopes for this product; the RQ1280. In general I like it but sadly it doesn't match expectations.
This shaver is supposed to represent "the ultimate shaving experience", I disagree, but although it doesn't match that claim it still does do a pretty good job. However, would you really want to fork out £270 for the sake of a pretty good job?
For example, I've wet shaved for a number of years and I expect to not feel stubble regrowth for around 10-11 hours and, although the skin is smooth after shaving with the RQ1280 (similar to wet shaving), I can distinctly feel the regrowth after 7-8 hours. To put this another way; when I wet shave in the morning it's fine for most of the rest of the day (c.9-10 pm), but when I shave at the same time with the RQ1280 instead I feel the need to shave again much earlier (c.5-6 pm). Therefore, Philips' `Super Lift & Cut' which is meant to cut hairs `below the level of the skin' is not as effective as a wet shave.
The shaving head is best compared to a flower with a 3 petal cluster; each petal (shave head) pivots independently within the shaver head housing, and each of the 3 of these in turn pivots independently too. This is easy flexing is helpful for following facial contours but if you have some stubborn stubble it feels like the shave heads are trying to bend away from the area where they're needed. It's as though Health & Safety had too much say in the design! Nonetheless, I found the best way around this problem is to curve an index finger around the neck of the shaver in order to make the shaver head more rigid and able to be pressed into the skin more effectively if need be.
The RQ1280 has a large easy to read display indicating shave-time remaining and it feels comfortable in the hand although the styling feels it owes more to Star Trek than it does to ergonomics!
There is a travel pouch supplied which holds the shaver and a little cleaning brush but there's no room for the charger and, considering the RQ1280 only holds an hour's charge and you may need to shave twice a day, this seems like a clumsy oversight for such an expensive shaver.
Overall, the job it does is effective but the price tag is a little unrealistic.
