Product Description

Product Description

"The Philip's Pocket Star Atlas" is a highly practical atlas in a compact format for use out of doors. It contains a series of maps showing the entire night sky, as well as a mass of useful astronomical data. It is suitable for use anywhere in the world. This popular atlas is now in its fourth edition, for which it has been revised, updated and expanded. It presents the sky in a series of 16 maps, showing stars down to magnitude 5.5. This means all stars are visible to the naked eye in semi-rural conditions.

About the Author

John Cox is co-developer, with Richard Monkhouse, of the astronomy catalogue imaging program 'Starry8', which has been used to generate the maps in the Pocket Star Atlas. He is based in Norfolk.

I think that this is a superb book full of basic and useful astronomical information, and it is small enough to pack whenever I go on holiday. The star maps are comprehensive and clearly labelled with a very good explanation in the first section of the book. There are also a lot of explanations about star types, galaxies and other things in the sky.
I bought this book to replace a copy that I have had since 1996 because I wanted the updated ephemera on planetary oppositions but it is more than worth it for the information that has been added since then on galaxies and our place in the Milky Way. A real gem at the price.

This is a handy little book for anyone who wants to know what he is seeing when he looks at the night sky. Good value at the price asked.
