Meet hue

The Philips hue ecosystem combines brilliant LED light with intuitive technology and it puts them both in the palm of your hand. Together, the bulbs, the bridge and the app will change the way you use light. Forever.

Experiment with shades of white, from invigorating blue to soothing yellow. Or play with all the colours in the hue spectrum. hue can wake you up. Help protect your home. Relive your favourite memories. Even improve your mood. It’s stunning. It’s smart. And it’s tailored for you.

What Can hue Do for You?

In the morning...

Use the timer option and turn hue into your morning wake up call. Set your lights to gradually brighten over time, waking you up in a rather more civilised fashion. Better still, you can create a scene from the image of a dawn sun and turn hue into your own personal sunrise.

Welcome home...

If you're working late or maybe out for the night, you can simply turn your wireless lights on or off remotely. That way you can make it look like you're home, even when you're not. You can also set your lights to come on at a set time. Ideal if you're away on holiday but you want people to think you're still in. Or maybe just before you arrive home from work. That way you'll never come back to a dark house again.

Relive a favourite moment...

With hue, any photo on your smartphone becomes a palette to paint with light, enabling you to bring back the memories of an epic holiday or capture the vibrancy of a summer day. Drag the picker across a photo to select a colour within the image. Or use the white light scale to pick an ideal tone. Your selected wireless bulb will reflect that choice instantly. And once you're happy with the scene, simply save it to use again.

Philips hue
600 lumen output - just the right amount of light

hue is smart, intuitive and easy to use. All the bulbs are fully dimmable, without ever needing to install expensive dimmer switches, tearing up your walls in the process. The A19 bulbs provide all-around lighting and are thus ideal to integrate into any E27 socket lamp or luminaire. Just screw out your traditional light bulbs and replace them by a hue LED lightbulb.

Philips hue
Customise your connected lighting

Make your smart lighting work for you. Nifty as it is, hue eases your life by offering you the possibility to automate light settings. The integrated Geofencing technology toggles the lights off when you leave your house and switches them back on when you’re back. Never come back to a dark home again. By linking it to If This Then That (IFTTT) you add another digital layer to your lighting. Have a bulb flashing when getting an important incoming mail or social media update, program a colour flash when your favourite team scores or have your lights react to the weather forecast. Possibilities are endless.

3 stars means 'it's OK' and that's all I can say about this system overall - not including the rediculus price which would take a star or two off to be honest. The concept is appealing and controlable dimmable 16 million colour lighting certainly caught my attention.

Good points: Each lamp are just about bright enough at an equivalent brightness of 53 watts tungstan lamp . The colour spectrum is excellent from the blue spectrum 'daylighting' effect to the soft and mellow yellows, reds, blues and so on. The ability to change your lighting effect to suit your mood, activity, and especially the time of day is particularly useful and enjoyable.

The bad points: Lack of information as to how to use/set up/control the system. It's clunky and not at all intuitive. There seems so little info from Philips. The andriod apps will only run on later versions and not 2.2 as I have on my Galaxy S but fine on my tablet. My main gripe is philips software which has no manual or even helpscreens. The software looses lamps which were previously visible to the system and suddenly lamps change from a colour that was set previously, to a default white or seemingly to a colour previously associated with a different scene. Suddenly you can't turn off a lamp or it won't turn on!. I understand wifi limitations but all my lamps are within 21ft of my bridge and this system is designed to control 50 lamps with the lamps in contact with the bridge communicating with the lamps that are not. So why such agro I ask myself?

Customer services at Philips are polite but often seemed to know about as much as I did about my issue when I called. It was 41 minutes of asking 'OK so how do I do that?!

A few years back they said all our appliances would be connected to the internet. But no-one said that would include our lightbulbs! Well the future is here. Control your lights over the internet, change their colours, set alarms, get your lights to come on automatically when you arrive home. Yes, this Philips Hue starter pack can do all of that.
The bulbs themselves aren't much bigger or heavier than normal bulbs and give a wonderfully warm and bright light - perfect for reading. Connect the base station to the internet, pair the lights and download some Hue apps and then you can really see what they are capable of.
Change the lights to suite your mood. Set them to come on slowly in the morning simulating sunrise. Or get them to glow in funky colours. All of this is possible!
I really enjoyed experimenting with HUE, but at the end of the day I'm not sure its worth the price and I find I'm not really using the functions that much. I think the apps need to be a bit more intuitive. I'd like one app that can do it all rather than needing 3. And I think it needs to come down in price too.

I decided to treat myself to a set of these lights - I've wanted some for ages but couldn't justify the cost and hoped they'd come down in price but in the end decided I deserved a present. Putting aside the cost, which doesn't really make them "practical", if you want to create colourful ambient situations in your property, these are as good as you'd imagine. You can, via their website or various apps, control the colour palette of these bulbs with quite granular precision. You can also set up timers and basic actions such as "geofencing" - e.g. turn off or on the lights based on your location e.g. coming home from work (obviously needs a GPS enabled smart device in your possesion for this to work).

The thing appeals to the "geek" in me is the integration with IFTTT - so you can set up / use recipes for things like "make the lights turn blue if it's raining outside" or "flash the lights if my team scores a goal" etc. etc. - there are plenty of recipes already set up for the Hue system and it's quite easy to create your own.

I also like the "friends of Hue" products (I haven't got any as yet) - but there are various other lights that you could integrate and create very nice lighting in your property.

If all that is too gimmicky, it's worth highlighting that the Hue does provide some very good basic "light" modes - such as "reading", "relax" and "energize" - these are all just different shades of white / yellow, but can be be easily selected depending on what you need. You could for instance, have the "energize" light come on gradually at a given time in the morning to wake you up naturally like those alarm clocks that do the same sort of thing.

The Philips Hue lighting system is a next generation way of lighting your home.

This starter pack consists of a base "bridge" that connects to your home router and three remotely controllable, multi-coloured LED E27 screw bulbs.

Once you have connected the hub to your router and screwed in the bulbs, simply download the Hue App to your Android or Apple smartphone and pair the App to your bridge by pressing the button in the middle of the unit.

You can now control the bulbs from your phone!

You can set a timer so that they come on or turn off at any time you want, you can turn them on or off with the phone, you can dim them, you can change their colour, you can create a lighting scene, or you can control them from anywhere!

I am really impressed with this system and my wife absolutely loves it. She hates coming home from work to a dark house and now she doesn't have to.

As this system is designed to be left on all the time, I have tried to find out the standby power consumption. I found the following on the Philips Hue Discussion board:

Each bulb uses 0.4 watts in standby mode.
The Bridge says 5v/600ma on the bottom - but the forum said that in reality it uses far less.

I also have a electrical power usage energy monitor that gives me a real time display of how much energy I am using. It showed no difference in power being used with the lights and bridge in standby to when I powered them off at the switches. I must add that energy monitors are not very good at detecting small changes in power use, but I suspect the amount is very small - perhaps 3 watts in total.

In use each bulb is rated at 8 watts, which is less than most "energy saving" compact florescent bulbs.
