This light is nicely designed with clean lines and fits together well, however fitting it is an exercise in frustration due to poor design decisions. Like another reviewer, separating the unit prior to fitting required rather more brute force than desired.

The instructions and design indicate some idealistic wiring scheme where there is a single pair of wires leading into the fitting and as a result there are just two small block connectors (live and neutral) to connect the fixture. In reality most ceiling light fixtures have live, neutral and earth both in and out and a live / switched live (with earth) connector as the switch circuitry is performed in the light socket as this is simple for single light rooms and the way it's been done for years in the UK. As a result this fixture is entirely useless without either hacking a hole in the ceiling and stuffing a connector box up there and feeding down just the switched live and neutral (and no earth) through the hole that you've just patched up again, or to cram an additional connector block into the light fitting which isn't particularly advised as there is not a lot of room and the additional block and wires partly obscure the bulb.

For some inexplicable reason Philips chose to use hex security bolts rather than common cross head screw or hex bolts for the inner sealed plastic container. Although an allan key has been supplied and there are minor cuts to allow the possible use of a flat head screw driver for when you've lost it, this is a ridiculous inclusion with no benefit whatsoever.

While it is nice that a bulb is supplied the description on the box claims a "true skin colour with high-quality light" in reality the bulb is just a standard (but bright) Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) yellow tint bulb.

Used to replace an old bathroom light, and it does look great. Plenty of light, and the energy saving bulb is straight on.

However it loses a star because:
1: It comes assembled, and trying to unscrew the shade from the base was difficult as there's no leverage, nothing to grip firmly enough.
2: The inner "screen" is fixed to the base with three fiddly screws, complete with their own little allen key. Hmmm...so when the bulb dies, I'm going to remember where I put that particular item? I replaced them with normal screws, and Philips should do likewise! That's lazy, poor design in my book.

There is no earth fixing. There's no metal in the base where one could be attached. But, with the base firmly attached to the ceiling, and two shades screening the electrics, this shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks to those that answered my problem of not being able to unscrew the glass shade from the plastic base to mount the light on the ceiling.
In the end I put a screw driver blade resting on one of the small cut outs on the lug position and tapped the end with a hammer which loosened it.On examination the problem was the location lug inserts had plastic flash in the moulding which caused the diameter of the base unit to be too small and so jammed on the glass shade. I removed this flash with sandpaper and took the sharp edge off the glass shade and if fits perfectly without any tightness. So the problem is with Philips production and quality control. The light itself is robust and now does the job fine.

I ended up buying two of these after being so impressed by the first one. It creates a lovely, bright light that isn't overpowering and diffuses well into the nooks and crannies of a bathroom/kitchen. The glass is surprisingly thick and it sits unobtrusively on the ceiling, neither making a statement nor being ugly. It's just a simple light that really does its job far better than a simple shade could ever manage. Highly recommended and replacement bulbs aren't too bad either, given they won't need replacing for some time.

Securely packed and delivered exactly as promised. A good, no frills, ceiling light. Easy to fit apart from the interior transparent cover, which is fastened by three torx screws, perhaps for security reasons. The allen key provided for these screws is inconveniently short. The CFL bulb takes a little while to reach full power but the resulting illumination is good. The glass cover has to be turned with a fair amount of force to lock it into position. Having said all that I'm none the less very pleased with this light.

Good quality. Easy to fit (with flexible drilling points - always useful when you want to fix to the joists). Simple, clean & fresh design. Worth paying a little more than other similar products (certainly much better than the Homebase lights which this model replaced).
On receipt the bulb was smashed in one of the two we purchased (it happens, and the packaging was good so can't fault that), but the sellers promptly refunded a portion of the cost to cover this.
Highly recommended.

Very nice light and fairly easy to fit. If replacing an existing fitting then make a note of the connections!
